chinese but aint-chinese?

Post by dynoto » Tue, 04 Oct 2016 9:20 pm

haven't been posting for awhile
last week marks the 15th month of my PR application, still being hopeful

recently i have some discussion with my PR colleagues regarding the racial distribution percentages and it reminds me of one question i had in my mind for quite some time.

during my PR application when i declared myself as a Chinese, the ICA staff ask me to strike through the chinese part due to none of my documents state my race as chinese even though my family are chinese, unlike PRCs who self identified and Malaysians which actually have their race stated.

So i'm wondering ... given ICA's background checks are they able to somehow trace my heritage and determine i'm chinese? or ... i'm considered as the "others" straightaway :P

Though inside the family census/card all family members religion affiliation are stated as Buddhist

Interesting. My wife was of Chinese ethnicity but born and raised in North America. They had no problem with her listing herself as Chinese but asked us to change the race of our children to 'Eurasian' as they didn't like the north-american standard of hyphenation i.e. 'xyz-Chinese'.

I'd have fought that. Being none Chinese severely limits your chances.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Didn't matter in the end, they gave us PR. My wife continued to list herself as Chinese.

Sorry to reply to old post,

but same case as my husband and I when we applied for PR 3 years ago. The officer asked us to provide proof that we are Chinese. So we gave them parent's BC (their BC stated they are Chinese and their name in BC are Chinese name), certificate of name change (they are Indonesian, which years ago requires them to change Chinese name to Indonesian-sounding name), and family registrar.

I think those are sufficient, and smooth sailing from there...
