Singapore is in the wrong timezone!

Post by Wd40 » Tue, 08 Nov 2016 2:10 pm

Not sure if many people know this.I am sure SMS knows this :)

Singapore is in the wrong timezone!

http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/tea ... ezone.html

The gist of the above link is that Malaysia changed its timezone to align west Malaysia with East and Singapore followed it.

I used to wonder how Japan so far away is 1 hr difference from Singapore and Europe, almost equally far away is 6/7 hrs difference.

I will be travelling to Yogyakarta soon for vacation and while doing research I realized that Yogyakarta is further away in the east and yet timezone is behind SG by 1 hr. This got me googling as I suspected Singapore is definitely in the wrong time and I found that link.

It's not the only place. China only has a single time zone! Australia has 4.5 time zones.

We are according to a NY colleague. He wondered why I declined his 2am meetings. He was surprised to learn that Sg and NY aren't on the same time zone.

I 'love' US colleagues who book meetings at 11pm my time and cheerfully note in the meeting invite 'we're holding this meeting early in the morning out of respect for our Asian collegues'.

China is large country and it tried to get 1 timezone that worked for it best. Australia is correctly timezoned.

Singapore though is the same timezone as Perth! While Perth is much further away.

I realize now why I can't get myself wake up early in the morning. Lol!

It is not that important. Just that it feels very odd for Singapore to share the same timezone as Hong Kong and Shanghai. When geographically it is not placed that far east. Just feels out of place.

I would expect the distance from the Equator has more significant impact than 1-3h variation from the standard zones. Afterall many countries follow summer/winter time changes.
I don't know, for me it appears natural. Back home, during summertime it starts to get brighter as early as 4am, and the day lasts till 10pm. In winter, 8am could be still dark and 5pm already dark. This is like 4-5h variation.

maybe gmt+8 was chosen to be more suitable for a commercial reason than a scientific one
here is a reference.

To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

maybe wd40 you need to question why India has a retarded timezone instead.. ? each time you have to schedule a call you also have to account for the 30 mins.*grumbles*
