Well my fellow tards; I'm being moved to Thailand - Bkk

Post by PNGMK » Sat, 29 Oct 2016 9:12 am

The move will be a staggered one as my SO has a contract here that runs till next May but I have to move up pretty soon. It's a step up for me but maybe not for my family.

Interestingly although we all whine about Singapore (well some of us) the thought of leaving this safe, stable, well-run little dot is a bit traumatizing. I don't intend to sell up in case it all goes tits up and I have to come back. We had intended on using the red dot as a base for many decades as my 16 yo needs to stay here for his education (he lives with my jandar) and continue to hope to do so.

My REP is a bit concerning as well (due Nov 2018) but I'll do what I can to ameliorate that; however as we all know the economy is in the shitter and we can't be choosers in times like this.

I've spent the last 10 days cramming on Thai tax, thai visas, thai cost of living etc but if any of you have any resources you'd like to share I'm all ears. The language bothers me; I can speak passable Malay and Chinese but Thai is just nothing to my ears so far.

I have enjoyed my repartee with all and everyone of you... unfortunately the nearest equivalent Thai to this forum (Thaivisa) seems to be populated by what are in comparison; ignorant, retired and angry sexpats that seem to lack the depth of knowledge we have here.

Live well, live happy, enjoy the slices of joy life brings you and think deeper when you can.

Probably not unless my purely Internet-based impression on the working culture in Thailand is very wrong.

Thanks MS. I am touched that you have personally responded.

For others asking my son is almost 16. I think it will be ok although he is in O levels next year....

I have family that moved from here to BKK and now in Vietnam. They loved BKK and would return in a heartbeat. Preferred it to Sg. I'm sure you'll fit right in.

My friend did the same thing a few years back, and loves it.

It definitely is important to pick up some Thai but it's not overly complicated from what I understand and if you can get short trips sorted on the back of a motorcycle it takes away another major hassle but overall I think you should do fine.
