Back when music was raw and not overly rehearsed - I hear Deep Purple and Jan Hammer in there.

Well...MM are English but he himself is South African, I had a German musician friend in Singapore, keyboard player, who was crazy into them. In the US most know MM only from his better take on a Springsteen song, which got tons of airplay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJh47LybCkU

And to a lesser degree the infectious Mighty Quinn, a Dylan song which a lot of people covered, : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K_qLZ3T8Ws

But my German friend knew everything about them where I didn't, and they have a long and varied career, more popular in Europe than the US

I liked one of the Reggae versions but I couldn't find it.

That's a rare video, this "Mighty Quinn."
It actually shows Manfred Mann quite a bit.
Usually he is looking away from or has his back to the camera.

These 2, "Blinded by the Light" and "Mighty Quinn," were not the only popular songs in the US.
There's also "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," which made No. 1 earlier in 1964:

Hmmm I don't think I ever realised MM were British [+SAFR lead]. Might have been too young back then hence delving into them passed me by. Heard BBTL maaany times back then. It still sounds more American than British to me... hmm.
Mighty Quinn, hadn't realised that was a Springsteen track. Very nice vid for the times! Interesting when tracks get covered but you only know the cover... until years later!
Lol - the reggae version. I find easy-going reggae like that always puts a smile on my face. Nice/thx :)

p.s. DWDD - blast from the past. Thinking back now it seems really quite idiosyncratic for the time it got released. Extremely er... 'structured' for want of a better description. Wonder if that came hand in hand with having to write a 45RPM release short enough to work in a jukebox (2:45-c3.30mins at max?]

An oldie and a goodie. The love between people and that is found in relationships. The love for humanity. The love for our natural world. The love for life, itself. That zest..........

The Rose

Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower and you, it's only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes the rose

Am watching the series Vinyl, about a record label in the early 70s, and Focus are one of their artists, Hocus Pocus is the hit on the radio. You may want to check this series, not for Focus, but just the music side of the drama. A lot of Bolivian Marching Powder happening there...

I mentioned it years ago in a post in the thread somewhere, but back around then WPLJ radio in NY used to use My Sweetheart (great song but never liked that title) as their call music. Took me years to discover the artist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jHQZQbWAok

Thanks for that tip. My VPN was acting up recently but now it seems ok again I'll definitely try and get to see that; certainly sounds up my street.

[I sent a copy of your post to Jan just in case he wasn't aware of the series].

While you're at it please tell him how their My Sweetheart song was a theme of the 70s for the greater NYC area, anyone from there / then hearing those legato guitar notes will be taken back in time to a world of different haircuts, cars and clothes.
