Perhaps Singapore will also spread the burden of NS across both genders instead of unfairly giving women a 2 year advantage in Uni or the work place?
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

A search of this forum will bring up my thoughts and ideas along those lines. I posted it in several threads over the past 8 or 9 years or so. I personally think it's great, but the ladies aren't so keen. ;-)

Then... a year or two of national service for all young Americans... everything from park rangers to inner city teaching.

Exactly, why stop at military service? Why not make a draft for all the job functions out there. Hey, draft me a husband.

From my experience with my well priveleged nieces and nephews and from mentoring at risk boys in low income high schools, I believe it would be beneficial for all.

For those born with a silver spoon in their mouth it would be an opportunity see what a minority their privileged position is and to get up close with the rest of the world... and to modify beliefs about the "other".

And for those out of the low income high schools, an opportunity to expand horizons, to see what is available in this world... and to modify beliefs about the "other".

Don't know about that husband part, though, EF... could you handle a boyfriend?

Whats this 2 year advantage of which you speak.... There is no logic to it!!

You have been speaking to angry locals too long methinks, who have no clue how to make the most of an opportunity they have.

Loads of folk did a gap year , or even two years , then when to Uni , had not detriment at all.
Life is short, paddle harder!!

BArns... you only have to walk around my workplace. Typical smart Singapore girls are 2 years ahead of the fellows. They've zoomed off to Oz - got their degrees - come back and hit the ground running while the poor fellows are still staggering through Poly.

Yeah, but they girls still hit a glass ceiling here just like the do in the US. So, within 3 years the guys will normally catch up and then pass them (if they would but stay on the same job long enough. That's the biggest problem here is job-hopping. I know, recruiters here can work on volume discounts because they have a never ending supply of job hopper at their beck & call. Kind of like Insurance Churning.
