Teaching Posts at International Schools

Post by Cath12 » Sun, 15 May 2016 2:25 am

Hello everybody! :)

My husband and I are looking to find out more information about working as primary school teachers in Singapore, starting in January 2017. We are from South Africa and have bachelor's degrees in Education, TEFL certificates and coaching experience in a variety of different sports. We have each been teaching full-time for 3 years, and teaching/coaching part-time for 4 years prior to that.

If you could answer some of our questions, it would be much appreciated.

1. What are some of the benefits as an expat teacher in an International School? (Housing, medical insurance, flights etc. )
2. What salary offers can we expect?
3. Can we apply to stay on the school property as boarding stewards/"house mom & dad" for boarding schools?
4. Is a school likely to employ both of us at the same school, or rather at separate schools?
5. Is it best to send joint applications to schools or separate?

Many thanks! :)

1. Housing allowance, one return flight per 2 years and medical insurance plus some assistance with PD.
2. Varies wildly with school. SAS may SGD$120,000 pa to shitty little schools at $48000 pa (the min on which they can get a work pass).
3. No not in Singapore.
4. You should look for a single school to work at - schools prefer that (it saves them costs).
5. IF applying together you'd apply together but frankly most schools recruit through job fairs - google "ISS - International School search". Register with them and go to their job fairs. At least 75% of international positions in schools are filled that way.
6. Watch out for 'fake' schools in China particularly. A few of my wife's friends have had recruiters from schools in China reach out - turns out the schools are fake and the recruiters promises worth nothing.
7. Age is an issue. Some countries will not issue visas to older (55+) teachers.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.

https://www.iss.edu/ There's another one as well that is well respected. I can't remember it at the moment. Direct recruitment into a school is possible by the ways - I'm not saying it isn't but my American wife has used ISS for years.

Eh? SMS I have no affiliation with those job search systems - they're just the standard tools a lot of teachers in the FSS know about.

It's for the poster below your post. (liftoggle) He's made two inconsequential posts in two threads (one-liners) with a dodgy California ISP.
