I probably would ... mostly because of instinct unless it is not easily reachable on the way.

Is the insticnt because you cant believe anyone would hold the door open to wait for another person to get in the lift?

Thats a sad state of affairs if true.

Once in the lift after doing that , do you instantly go for the door close button as well.

That could be the original reason, after 15 years living here some habits are just there. Although I would not press the button when the door is almost closed. In that case, I would let the lift happily go.

When I get into the lift, I do not press the close door button, but I try to stay at the corner farthest to the door and do not make eye contact with anyone still outside. If they can still open the door, then I accept that and do not get bothered by it.

If this someone is holding the door with hand, leg or some other object at the door then I don't, but if by pressing the button, then how am I suppose to see it?

Depends: If the person holding the door has encouragingly made eye-contact with me then no. Esp. if they are alone in the lift.

If the lift is crowded and I passed the lift buttons then yes I likely would. Because
a) Some lifts time-out on open doors and force them to close
b) the possibility of some kiasu-**** person behind the kindly person banging out 180BPM on the 'Close door' button.

I can't believe a simple thing like using lift comes with elaborate nonsense called etiquette! I don't think I have to kill more brain cells wondering if my next move might offend the nice person who holds the door for me.

I prefer how it is in Japan, where if people are already in the lift and you are not there yet, you simply and politely wait for the next lift.

There it is "I do not inconvenience you for me" whereas here is it "I am ok to inconvenience you for me".

I rather people do not hold a lift for me. But that's me, and I'm admittedly weird about stuff like this.

Of course, depending on things like how long it's been open, how far away you are. whether or not you're in a hurry or the lifts are infrequent, etc.

Far more important "lift etiquette" is the ability to correctly steer a heavily laden rollerbag over shins and insteps of those mouth breathers who insist on getting into the lift before anyone else can get off.
