The government heavily taxes what it wants to dissuade people buying; aka 'Sin taxes', so that's tobacco and alcohol.

Buying any car is considered a luxury for most and something the Govt need to control. So perhaps one could call that a 'Luxury goods tax'.

SG can be cheap if you 'go local'. But if you bring western ways and needs, western groceries, smoking, drinking, fine dining, private housing, a car etc., then 'your experience might differ'.
