It's unlikely that a civil matter (debt) would involve either the police or immigration IME.

But if the creditor has been to court seeking an enforcement order, and the court finds against the debtor, then I'd expect that to appear on your 'legal record'.

Or if the bank managed to convince relevant authorities that the person had the intent to leave the country without paying the debt while making it.

I don't think the banks have to try hard- they can fast forward and secure such orders ... pretty quickly

Well.... I've been in such a pickle in my younger years and have been able to get in and out. The key is whether the debt was sold off or actually subject to court action (and for this the trigger is probably the amount - maybe $100,000 upwards?).
