We even told them they could wear a white shirt and tie and they are already carrying the multipurpose recording equipment (smartphone). But one day is about the best we can do.
This job is equivalent to those Bangla guys trimming grass in HDB estates, no surprise you cant get locals to do this job. Your industry should be classified similar to those that that maintain the grass, cut branches of trees that are about to fall, etc. If it is not, I am surprised, how the otherwise efficient Singapore system could miss this.

Well, thanks for the mention and glad that the article was useful. Just came across this. Not specifically related to SG but general workplace culture.

It's not been missed. I've written probably a dozen letters to the various Ministers holding the post at the head of MOM over the last decade. I've met with MP at MPS's where our main office is located (along with our MD - must take Ang Mo along to give boss face, what!) That's why I said until the ministers actually get a good dose of Dengue, nothing will change. Hell, it's my company that regularly bails out the NEA when they get a cluster that we aren't currently handling. Sometimes I have 50 guys out on Sunday mornings with the NEA just to sort 'em out. Problem is there is no cooperation between ministries either. NEA knows the problem but MOM doesn't listen to them either. Actually, we should be given construction industries foreign worker quotas instead of Service Industry quotas. After all, we are required to be registered with the BCA.

With the Ringgit heading down the toilet , Malaysians are getting cheaper by the day to employ?

100K Ringgit is now just over 30K Sing....

have prices in Malaysia risen with the fall in the Ringgit?

More depression on the way for wages in Singapore?

:) interesting .. since the past few years, Malaysians willing to take up jobs actually supposedly reduced, as they preferred to work in MY

But that doesn't still stop the number of Malaysians, for jobs like house keeping, Factory, bar etc, pouring in

If RM becomes more weaker, it may boost the interest again in SG

PS, apparently Bank Negara has said the weakening RM is temporary, and it will recover ..

The recent GST implementation in April has already driven the prices up. Some expensive electronics sold in Malaysia are already revised to reflect the huge depreciation against USD. And yes, you will see more desperate Malaysians trying to hop into Singapore for work, even if it means puttering in their sputtering motorcycles across Tuas Second Link or Causeway Link for hours each way.

Ah Liz Ryan, as much as I love reading her HR prep talk, I often wonder how relevant her posts are to the reality. Don't get me wrong - I'd be very happy if all HR and employers are like what she envisions.

They are only relevant to a specific group of companies in some specific job market / working environments. People who write this sort of things are IMHO generally of three sorts:
a) naive, overoptimistic enthusiasts that perhaps have seen one or two cases of such system(s) in place where it actually worked, but they just lack imagination or/and common sense to realize the variety of the scenarios outside their own thinking box.
b) educators on the mission hoping to make an impact in the not so fair world.
c) just doing their jobs writing what many people would like to hear

Or possibly, she is spot on... eviscerating the wankers that actually think they know what they are doing in HR (SMS excepted, of course). I judge corporate recruitment to be so f*cked up that only the mediocre make it through the stupid process... to be interviewed by the mediocre who also made it through the f*cked up process. The entire process is purposefully designed to eliminate those outside of a calculated range. Are you brilliant and eccentric? You're f*cked at any company that uses Taleo.

What's your greatest weakness?

You: I'm too honest.

Interviewer: Too honest? I don't think that's a weakness.

You: Who gives a f*ck what you think?

For me the problem has always been, doing too well in the interviews and then not living upto expectations on the job. I really wish interviewers did a better job in interviewing and made sure I am the right candidate.

I find that jobs that perfectly match my profile, I don't get called for interviews and then jobs that don't match, I get called and then I give it a try and get selected and then I join and repent.

It is all f*up for sure but communism and socialism and all the major religions (with some exceptions perhaps) and many many other things are all beautiful and fair and good for the world and the civilization yet they don't work the way they supposed to. It's because they contain one common factor: the humans.

Taleo is designed to weed out people who won't put up with needlessly typing in irrelevant information.

If you can put up with that, you can do the mind-numbing tasks that suck out people's souls the job posting is for.

Mindless drone? When can you start?

Critical thinkers, creative types and people with initiative need not apply.*

* If the stupid system even bothers to send you a notification when the company updates the post with "position closed" after 8 months instead of you checking everyday but on day 90, it insists you change the password wherein you can't use the previous five passwords, minimum of 20 characters, must be alphanumeric characters only, and you can't just change 1-5 characters in your current password

I have never ever ever had an interview call when I applied through taleo or any company website. There are 100s of people who apply and there is no way I will get picked. All my interviews and job offers have always been when a recruiter picked my CV from monster.
