I went through appreciating nobody asked me about my salary, my nric and number of abortions.

One a bit silly question is about how much I would be willing pay for a box of cheeses. With no info on the quantity (weight) it is not possible to answer.

Yup, the weight is very important when it comes to estimating price for cheese.

Add to the weight, the quality and type of cheeses.

I'm no longer in Singapore, and, one thing I missed was a good selection of blue cheeses, Roquefort, and Gorgonzola.

Many thanks for the support so far.

What cheeses or cheese products your're missing in Singapore? What's bothering you with the current offering?

Price.

Besides, there is practically zero variety of the quark cheese, for example a type like this one:

All what can be bought (also in a very limited variety) is a cottage cheese which is a different thing.

The prices bother me, why does cheese have to be that expensive in supermarkets? Especially even simple cheese like parmesan.

Price, I totally agree. Thanks for the response.

The major supermarket and hypermarket operators control the whole retail market by actively segmenting it around different store concepts (and store brands/banners). As a result, retailers control access to shoppers and have very strong bargaining power over suppliers of all forms of food and drinks.
Besides that, retailers are very profit margin driven in Sin because of their very high overheads, especially store rentals. Importers and local distributors in the first place charge a margin for their services, too.

@x9200: Is it similar to "Tvorog" ? I know the popular quark types in Germany but the texture is a different.

Resurrecting this old thread to proudly report a novel (?) approach to inexpensive Western-style cheesecake made in Singapore from the ingredients available in Singapore.

Basic version (still more than decent):
2kg of Paneer cheese
6 eggs
0.25kg flour
Sugar and vanilla flavour as desired.

Main trick is to blend well the paneer cheese and not to kill the blender. I used a meat grinder for the first stage, and a hand blender for blending and mixing the cheese with the whole rest. Probably a good idea is to add some cream, milk or more eggs - cheap paneer is pretty dry, but still sufficiently wet to get a smooth texture.

The cost of the above is ca $15 - paneer can be bought for S$5-8 per 1kg.
