MRT breakdown: NS, EW lines down for hours

Post by Pal » Wed, 08 Jul 2015 1:45 am

Possibly the worst MRT breakdown to date, services on the North-South and East-West Lines came to a complete halt for several hours during evening rush hour on 7th July 2015.

This is the first time services on both lines were affected at the same time. A power fault had affected trains along the North-South and East-West Lines at 7.15pm, said SMRT in a statement. “This led to a system-wide disruption along the entire line.”

This highlights a flaw with how Singapore does things: all is fine and good until somebody goes off-script.

This shows a serious lack of redundancy and fail safe measures built into the electrical supply. One single train with electrical issues should not bring down the network, yet it behaved just as the northeastern US electrical distribution network did when one generating station went unexpectedly down.

When building out major datacenters we made sure to have at least two separate power sources leading into the building. Within the building power management was set up to isolate any failures and keep them from spreading.

However, in one installation, we placed the transformers from two separate branch circuits in a single underground vault. One night, about 3 AM in the morning, one of the transformers blew up. It took out the other transformer and much of the wiring for both. After that I always recommended separate vaults for transformers. Separate vaults for backup batteries. And, second floor or higher generating sets.

Procurement of design, goods and services is the key issue along with managing expectations

I don't see that going wrong with Singapore; not AT ALL.

At least the "assets" got sweated whilst the maintenance was reduced to bump up short term profits.

SMRT have brought this on themselves.

The chase for profit whilst being a Govt entity..... stupid!

i'm looking at some of the pictures on the article posted, looks like the situation was handled shambolically.

Correct me if I"m wrong, SMRT is privatized, I wonder if Temasek Holdings being the 2nd largest share holder has anything to do with this profiteering, after all they have to keep their 16% avg gains from the bonds they sell, what better way to guarantee these gains but by buying into local infrastructures that we cannot do without, telcos, transport, power/gas, properties. Its a rinse cycle, all you need is put people in and money comes out.
