Post by wendyboey » Sat, 20 Jun 2015 1:21 pm

 lately i feel numbness in my right toe, joint pain in my right thumb and tingling sensation in my right wrist... it has been ongoing for about a week..

My family tell me go see chinese sinseh but i scared acupuncture needles and bitter medicine. I know that sounds silly..

JR8 - sorry about my signature. Have taken it down and read the forum rules. I was reading your post half way when the webpage refreshed. You mention the condition, may i know is it? I had the issue for about a week and i injured my lower back a few weeks ago. Now my friends say maybe its caused by the back injury. Nonetheless going see doctor on monday. Thanks

Ok cool, there's not much latitude for play-play here; why it's remains a useful forum.
I can tell you what happened to me, but I don't think it will help you.
I was fit and healthy, just back from a pretty major 2-centre dive trip around Asia and at a very posh cocktail reception with my wife, her employer and colleagues, when I simply and without any warning crumpled in a heap on the floor. That was... an unusual moment, as my wife/friends/colleagues thought it was a prank (perhaps an extreme one). For me it was quite terrifying.
They took me away by ambulance. I spent maybe a month unconscious in IC. I was told I had Multiple Sclerosis (and hence the unspoken bit, was going to die quite soon). I was bed-ridden for maybe 3/4/5 months, it's a blur, then essentially taught to walk again, from getting off my bed and standing up (that took maybe 2 weeks), to doing 10M in the hall up and down, three times a day for a couple of months, then physio at home for 6-8+ months more, re-learning to climbing stairs, and so on.
I'm never going to be the long-distance runner that I used to be, and live in that 'mental space' again which I mourn. Not that I'd wish to do such stuff these days, just I miss having the option cut off. Or maybe I could, if I really put my mind to it.... lol.
What I got was some form of virus. Thought to be a variant of tick-borne Lymes Disease. The result was peripheral neuropathy. I.e. the nerves in my extremities aren't quite dead, but I have no feeling in them. Toes, feet, fingers. The bits are all sort of there, and/or permanently numb/tingly. My todger 'Midnight Jonny' survived unscathed through all of this, quite remarkable, or not, for he is a legend parallel to Lemmy from Motorhead
All of this happened to me out of the blue. I enjoy a beer, nothing too crazy, but otherwise live a clean life. It was a major major shock.

What ever you are experiencing, 99.8% it is not going to be what I had. But do not mess about. Your body is telling you you have a problem, and you better take it damned seriously. So, proper doctor, or local cina witch-doctor for some herbal bull$? Do NOT mess around, your body is giving you a warning call. Please consider it most seriously, take care of yourself... and best of luck to you.

Looking back I don't know what was worse. Life takes on a whole new spectrum (one can't imagine). Being told I had 6-12 months to live.... trying to reconcile that bolt from the blue, you just feel terribly sad at the injustice, but resigned and vaguely stoic (sort of angry and stoic at the same time hehe).
The nurse whacking gelatin plugs up my crippled ar$se each day, so I could take a dump, was certainly different. She was pretty foxy too. Another nurse took my iPod away each week and downloaded German punk albums on it..... hahaha!
Sort yourself out now; you really don't want to end up in that kind of situation.

It sounds like something neurological. I suggest you go to a GP and get a referral to a specialist. If the one you go to doesn't give you one, go to another for a second opinion.

Acupuncture may help but you'd need to go to a proper one; the type who works with the non-traditional Chinese medical community.

So, yeah. Doctor.

As the other posters says, go and see a doctor. Do not panic. It may not be anything serious but you need to do some checks. Although neurological is probably the first thought but I believe it can be cardiovascular too.

BTW, how old are you?

Thanks all for your posts, I finally picked up the courage to go see the doc. I'm terrified of needles and medication, but I think I'm more terrified of losing the ability to live life normally as what JR8 shared... (x9200 - i'm in early 30s.. but not very healthy  )

Doc say it's not related to nerves nor my lower back as the issue is localized, only in toe and not whole ankle. Likely deficiency of vitamin b, folic acid.. he put me on neuroxel for 30 days.

He also ask how long i had my last medical checkup, cos the scariest cause would be diabetes. i'm also concerned if might be caused by gout, since my uric acid level borderline high and sometimes joints already pain. so have to monitor the situation for next 30 days see if any improvement after my increase vit b intake

For my wrist and fingers, doc think related to carpal tunnel  he say the hand muscles are 'controlled' by neck area, not lower back. gave me some muscle relaxant and painkillers, havent took that yet cos dont want to be reliant on pills for pain control

Hopefully that should help, they put me on large doses of B12/Folic acid too. Initially via IV-drips, then later after discharge back home with daily injections, and then lastly via vitamin B12 pills which I still take daily now! AFAIUI that's about doing everything possible to repair recent nerve damage.
I initially needed very large doses/direct->bloodstream, so if pills are appropriate for you now then that's good news :)

Totally unrelated but my father had gout some years ago. In Europe it is considered to be something older people get if they are 'living too well', in this case drinking plenty of stuff like red-wine and sherry/port, eating lots of cheese, etc. Uric acid crystallises in the joints, especially in the toes, and at an extreme is so painful it is almost disabling. Look it up on wikipedia and get an idea how it is caused (it's broader than just wine/cheese of course), and what the symptoms are. My father recovered fully after a few months.

Well done for plucking up the courage to see the doc, and best of luck!

re: carpal tunnel. Do a google on it with reference to suggested office ergonomics. I.e. desk height, versus PC monitor height, vs chair height vs where your wrists lean vs the keyboard and so on. Just to check your workplace ergonomics are not at fault.

Thanks JR8! Great to know your dad fully recovered.
have to cut back on red meat and drink lots of water, read that that helps flush the uric acid out of the body too

Yeah... not nice, and I don't recommend it, but the care, staff and food were 5* - apart from my consulting doctor who wanted to micro-wave my balls of course. I got to know the nurses and doctors well over my time there... and I'll never forget one doctor (she was damned hot actually!), who was quite senior but reported to my overall 'consulting doctor', and when she dropped by towards the end of my stay, she read the prognosis/recommendation of further treatment from my her boss. I was in bed, and she was standing by me, and she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said '[JR8], please don't say anything about this... but my advice to you is to go and get an independent second opinion before you consider any of this suggested future treatment'. That was a personally risky and understated thing for her to say, 'hello DING-DONG do you read me!?', and I knew it.

That was when I made the journey back to UK for that 2nd opinion (via senior colleagues of my doctor/bro-in-law only to be told the diagnosis and suggested treatment were... wrong, dangerous, and beyond explanation... ).

Yep, I don't want to go back to that place again anytime soon. Meanwhile time to pop down the beer shop and get some AC/DC on

- Yes the staff were mostly really great. Younger Germans are often into music/alt music, even doctors it seems, so there were hours spent chit-chatting about that. They were surprised and amused to hear that as a teenager I'd been pretty heavily into the very alt/punk German 'Nina Hagen Band'.... lol...

- One take-away I'd suggest. If you get a major health diagnosis, even from high-end medical staff, always*1000 go and get a 2nd if not a 3rd opinion.
