Man Shot Dead Near Shangri-La Hotel Singapore

Police confirm that one man was shot dead and two others were detained in an incident in the vicinity of the Shangri-La hotel at 4.36 am.

The trio was earlier stopped at a Police vehicular checkpoint set up along Ardmore Park. When asked to open the car boot for checks, the driver suddenly accelerated the vehicle towards Anderson Road. Despite Police warnings to stop, the driver continued to crash through Police barricades, endangering the lives of the officers. Police opened fire at the vehicle to stop further danger. The vehicle subsequently stopped at the junction of Orange Grove Road and Anderson Road.

Substances believed to be drugs were found on one of the persons detained.

Police are in control of the situation. Orange Grove Road, Anderson Road and Ardmore Park are temporarily closed to facilitate police operations. Members of public are advised to stay away from the area.

Due to the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue, security measures including vehicle and person check points have been put in place in the vicinity of the Shangri-La hotel.

Driving around that neighbourhood at 4.30am in an ah-bengy Subaru Impreza is probably glaringly 'out-of-profile' for the area, and during the Shangri-La Dialogue, with all the mega-security that brings.

I wonder who the customer is, he's got be to soiling himself right now...

UPDATE TO INCIDENT ALONG ORANGE GROVE ROAD
Police and officers from SAF's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Explosives (CBRE) Defence Group have searched the vehicle involved in the incident at the vicinity of Shangri-La Hotel. No explosives, arms or weapons were found in the vehicle. A bag containing white powdery substances believed to contain controlled drugs was recovered in the vehicle.

The driver of the Singapore-registered red Subaru Impreza, a 34-year-old man, was pronounced dead at scene. Two men, aged 26 and 31 who were passengers in the vehicle, have been arrested. The 31-year-old man sustained injuries during the incident and was conveyed to hospital conscious. Substances believed to be controlled drugs and an item believed to be a drug-taking utensil were found on the men arrested. The driver and one of the passengers are wanted by the authorities for various offences. All three subjects are Singaporeans. No weapons were found on the three subjects.

Preliminary investigations indicate that this is an isolated incident.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In other countries, people might be a bit slower to believe the police's account. Others might question whether it was necessary to use lethal force.

I say this with no agenda. It's just quite eye-opening.

Oh, they are questioning it here already. They are just as stupid as in other countries. The only difference is here they only killed the driver and took the other two into custody. Certain other countries I could name, there wouldn't have been any survivors AND a couple of bystanders would probably be killed as well. I, personally think they did exactly the right thing.

Those who suggested the tyres should have been shot etc have been shut to by their own fellow countrymen saying such things only work in movies ...

Ps, also proves the cops weren't in very stand by mode to have reacted quickly, considering the barriers used here mostly are not real barriers ...police firearm training proven as effective.

People in Singapore have no reason to complain about police brutality. It is something in fact just opposite - police often acts (over)gently, warning, rather than punishing so I guess people are positively surprised that despite of the rarity of such incidents the police acted fully professional and the right way.

in certain cities you could name, the getaway car would have had 45 miles of 6-lane highway to play on, at 3x the speed. plus, the police would have been sure that the guys inside have at least assault rifles.

The shot was made from the front at a high angle (if you look at the windscreen). Surely it isn't fired from a police officer on foot in front of a speeding car, eh? A sniper already on standby?
