A home like none other

Post by movingtospore » Sat, 11 Apr 2015 2:11 pm

I wonder if any of the board admins want to let Capella know their ad is outstanding example of poor grammar.

"A home like none other."

Yep. That it is.

Also saw a brand spanking new sign in a very high-end mall downtown day for "men accessories." Where? I could use a man as an accessory. :P

One might want to sweep off their own back porch before complaining about others?

What is a "downtown day" :P

Many children of this country learn English from teachers who barely know English. There are some that can, and do teach it well, but of course there aren't many. The rest learn poor English that simply gets reinforced from every direction once outside of the classroom.

So there were a group of not-so-young students on an excursion along the Singapore River, and they were at the Sir Stamford Raffles statue.

Teacher asked very grandly, 'what is the statue doing?'.

not bad, vs a Singapore Uni student, who, when I prompted him to explain the story of the Merlion to some HK students on an exchange - declared that the Merlion was an amazing idea created by the STB - to promote Singapore !

I've always wondered about that. As far as I know, there are no lions in Asia except in Gujarat. Someone must be really high or really delirious to come up with the merlion.

The Merlion was originally created by Mr Fraser Brunner for Singapore Tourism Board in 1964.
The lion head symbolises the legend of the discovery of Singapura, as recorded in the "Malay Annals". In ancient times, Singapore was known as Temasek, a Javanese word for sea. In the 11th century A.D, Prince Sang Nila Utama of the Sri Vijaya Empire rediscovered the island.

When the Prince first landed on Singapore's shores, he sighted a mystical beast which he later learnt was a lion. The Prince then decided to name the island "Singapura" which in Sanskrit means Lion (Singa) City (Pura). The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek and represents Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village.”
The mystical beast was most probably a tiger, which were found in Singapore back in the days of Sir Stamford Raffles and earlier. The prince probably didn't know the difference between a lion and a tiger other than both were big cats. But it was the old STB that decided to put a fishy tail on the cat. The rest is hype.
