Where to buy dinnerware in Singapore?

Post by RyanTheLion » Tue, 10 Feb 2015 3:53 pm

Hi, I am new to this forum. Just moved to Singapore for less than a week and trying to settle down and furnish my house. I have been trying to shop around for dinnerware in Singapore but seems like I can't find much alternatives other than Taka which sells really expensive plates and bowls.

Do you guys have any advice on where I can buy nice and affordable dinnerware?

Can try IKEA at Alexandra or Tampines.

I wasn't immediately persuaded by Pal's suggestion.... but a few seconds later I remembered that all our daily crockery is indeed from IKEA. Plain white, simple, hard-wearing, we've had it c10 years and still going strong. I don't know what their tableware/cutlery is like, but surely worth a look if it is anything like their crockery. Plus they often have all-in-one 'starter boxes', cutlery, glasses, crockery at very good prices => simple.

Taka is rather like Harrod's, in some ways. Good for higher end specific things, esp. 'expatty' things like espresso machines etc. otherwise it is just $$$.

Robinson's is another option. Middle of the road, more akin to something like Debenhams (I'm assuming you're a Brit!).

Good luck settling in!

Yes, IKEA has a wide variety at very good prices.

Can also try TANGS at Orchard, they have a comprehensive dinnerware section at the basement.

Tangs to me is akin to John Lewis. Middle-range/+. Focused on solid quality/value.

So, good suggestion, I hadn't thought of it earlier...

Knives except butter knives wear down easily. Otherwise (if you don't need sharp blades), they're fine. A lot of cafes and middle-tier restaurants use IKEA crockery and cutlery.

Totts up Dunearn Road has a nice selection of stuff you don't find everywhere. Can be pricey. But its like kitchen supplies heaven.

I got a complete set of Corelle flatware from a Giant store in IMM I think. You can also buy at Tangs for five times the price.

Totts and Ikea. The former may not necessary be that expensive. True, there are some rather pricey stuff over there but also a lot of reasonably priced and good looking pieces of various types.

If you are not looking for anything fancy, then Ikea is probably the best budget choice.

I've heard of totts but never been - not that simple to get to. It sounds like my kind of dream shop :) I'll resolve to visit soon.

Definitely you should like it. It not only carries the end consumer, retail stuff but also supplies/equipment for the restaurants etc. And they organize cooking classes too.

I've just been around the new Big Box mall at Jurong East today, they have a Habitat and down on the ground floor their own version of a COSTCO style shop; boy of which do good homeware and handy if you live nearby.

And another thing that crossed my radar this morning...

'• Crate & Barrel has opened a five-storey megastore at orchardgateway@emerald.'

Certainly worth a look I would have thought, esp. considering the central handy location.

"orchardgateway@emerald" yet another ridiculous place name...

Crate and Barrel is not cheap by any means in the US. I wonder how much the markup will be here...
