When I visit your country, people ask my work and I say I am an IT guy, they correct it, that I am an IT Engineer
I smile and then they go "oh, so you are an Engineer.. why you don't have the Letters ER before your name in your name card ?? "
I am like "oh, in Singapore, that's not how it works .. people aren't so keen to paste the few letters after the name or before the name .. " than telling them my Proper PG is in Marketing !!!!

I don't know anyone who does this. For realsies.
Then again, we also don't put our bachelor degrees in name cards.

Technically I'm an engineer, my work calls me an associate purely for HR purposes, but they also allow me to put just about any title on my visiting card.
Therefore every time i made a new set of cards I made up a new title.
e.g
system engineer
xyz specialist
sales engineering
design prime Asia Pacific
etc etc..
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

And that guy's from Sri Lanka.

He's an accountant who has then gone and got every known equivalent international conversion/qualification off the back of it. Oh, and plus the MCSI, i.e. he can set up a PC.

And the picture was in jest, about how many qualifications can a person try to add .. definitely not related to PH !

Or... Custom Solutions Engineer
Or maybe... Chief Knowledge Officer... I bet this person doesn't get within a 100 feet of the 'C' level offices.
What's a 'sales executive'? Why, it's the gal in the tech store sitting behind the counter.
Ask me if I think 'Director' is overused.
Lol! I wish I got to see more of Dilbert, as the strip really does get it.
In the UK 'Director' is a pretty protected name, it means you have joint/several liability over the affairs/accounts etc of the company. Not a title that gets scattered about.
But from my career... I was a Vice President. Wow!, Ooh!, Swoon!.... yeah, along with the 5000 other VPs lol...
Yes, that's roughly what it means in the US also. At my previous company, plenty of non-mgmt people were promoted to Director level roles solely so they could sign SOWs and other contracts for the company.
I was told banks have so many VPs due to banking laws in some countries requiring specific levels within the company in order to be able to make specific decisions.I guess overtime responsibilities were delegated down and thus the title inflation.

Take this guy:
http://ph.linkedin.com/in/hip2b2
I know him personally so I know he's appended all those titles and certifications just to show how ridiculous it looks. In case some people miss the irony, his first title is "Chief Nerd." He knows enough people in high places in the industry that he can get away with making funny CVs.

Naaah. He was already quirky even before he got his bachelor's degree. Whenever it was when things went awry, it happened looooong before he touched his first computer.

I agree with SE but also I think programmers can be engineers if they are developing new languages, compilers, operating systems, middleware, etc.
Ask me if I think 'Director' is overused.: A Director is a Manager of Managers, plain and simple, and as well as is overused, is also misused.
Gotta love this Google exec's title:

My career goal is to create the conditions for world peace in my lifetime. That's all.
His book is a very good read, there are some on this forum who would certainly benefit from it (I've read it twice, and still page through it and books like it frequently, so I can take a dose of my own medicine).
Oh, and he is Singaporean.

Some cultures are just so hung up on titles. By contrast, there are places where someone may introduce himself like so:
"Hi, I'm Dave and I'm a carpenter."
Turns out, he owns contracting company which he took over from his father after years of doing his fair share of sawing and hammering and manages several foremen and carpenters in the payroll. Whereas, some people would say "I own a construction company."
