The vocalist can't cope with what's required.
The mix/recording is lousy.
All I see is a bunch of back-of-the beach beach-bums who think they're doing an oh-so-cool version of a good song, whereas they're massacring it.

They're just not very good.
Alright; geez...you don't have to respond like I'm recommending Nickelback. It's a one-off thing.

I should cache my music library on my devices off the cloud, in case that MH flight goes awry, at least I'll have some rocking songs playing.

One can never have too much Sevendust.

Eeh! Nickelback.... Eeeeeh dirty! ;;;;-D
I'm not criticising you or your choice (we all like different things right?, fine), just that was my impression. As a first impression it was pretty blunt...

ok, #1 in an installment, though quite a diversion from the current genre

Though they have a low-life hippy image, they always strove for top quality fidelity and pioneered some musical invention in guitar design and live music production.

As they have such a huge catalog, an experienced tour guide can help navigating their many personas.

Their Garage Band-ish start:

Alright So I used to be a big fan of the Tales from the Crypt Horror show and they made a movie of it in the nineties and of course i had to get the soundtrack tape from that movie and thats where I discovered stoner/sludge metal in the form of The Melvins, Here they are with a song called Instant Larry

New Era Classic Metal

George Lynch - Flesh and Blood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gxBWjwRv2Q

killer solo at 3:00

Didn't get into him until well after he left his main band, I missed years of this killer playing but is solo stuff is pretty good.

So what is the primary attraction - the overall sound, the technicality of the players, the heaviness, the solos?

I would post some killer solos but I may be the only one interested in that sort of thing.

I am listening to the George Lynch Song its Super!! nice recommendation
but its quite not in agreement with my current playlist, i'm listening to all sorts of horrible loud thrashy screaming wishing death and evil upon the world kind of stuff and here you are posting a really cool riff laden song with
Ray Gillen on vocals ( have you heard his seventh star album on Black sabbath? ) it is one of the really underrated albums they have made.
solo at 3:23 is really nice and no wonder I love it

on the subject of Sludge, its normally associated with stoners and people who are in no particular hurry to sound fast, the slow pace of the songs and distortion add their own heaviness to the songs.
