Whose songs are longer: Dream Theater or Phish?rajagainstthemachine wrote:Going to spend the rest of today at work writing some documentation and listening to Progressive music like this
Andromeda - Swedish Prog rock band very similar to Dream Theater

I haven't heard Phish, but I assume they are a bit long as well? I have several friends who dislike DT because it puts them to sleep.nakatago wrote:Whose songs are longer: Dream Theater or Phish?rajagainstthemachine wrote:Going to spend the rest of today at work writing some documentation and listening to Progressive music like this

Ok, maybe I don't know the difference between screamo and growl like your link, I probably don't like either. It sounds silly to me but also I don't like the anger or negativity of it, much like I don't like gun nuts or to a lesser degree, FPS games.nakatago wrote:Not screamo though; he uses that timbre for much expected gravitas.

Personally, I prefer a deep growl over screaming and just plain gravelly-voiced singing; I can take it over select parts of a song (given proper context), just not the whole song. E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpyHWh4y9Ss
Worlds apart, Phish are /were the next Grateful Dead / jam band, DT were like the next Rush / Dregs / etc. but you know them.rajagainstthemachine wrote:I haven't heard Phish, but I assume they are a bit long as well? I am however an occasional listener, but I cannpt go through a whole DT album.
Yeah I knew you wouldn't laugh, it was a self-deprecating comment, maybe I know the Star One still is borderline silly, but I still like it.rajagainstthemachine wrote:I won't laugh at people because they listen to music that isn't metal or it's variants, or because it is too soft.Brah wrote:What I alluded to in an earlier post 1-2 pages back, you may even know them / him, but they are no where near as heavy as the stuff you listen to. So don't laugh... Weird space metal stuff.
I liked this band Star One but not the female vocals, very progressive reminds me of so many bands of this genre.
Oooh...I like them. Their songs feel like short films.Brah wrote:I like what little I know of bands like Avenged Sevenfold, have one of their albums, but this is an are of new territory for me.
Nice, I liked that too. The striking thing to me is that they don't just pile in and do a thrash number, the composition is measured 'held back' and delivered in a very measured way. You'd almost imagine the vocalist had trained as a classical singer. His enunciation is extremely precise and clear. Everything is held back and hinged on his vocals.nakatago wrote:
Here's another metal band with a black guy who growls and can still sing:

you mean Gallagher? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gasAFyonmmIJR8 wrote:That's what I like about this topic... just throwing out ideas/suggestions, without expectations.... no rush, there's links I haven't played from pages back yet either... but I will.
At least weekly I have a 'wow moment' from the suggestions made by others. It's priceless.
It might not be something I'd go and buy, but.. I definitely come away feeling more informed...
p.s. Blow me Brah is you aren't the Gallagher brothers estranged scally dad!
hehe...
