Going to spend the rest of today at work writing some documentation and listening to Progressive music like this

Andromeda - Swedish Prog rock band very similar to Dream Theater

To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

Whose songs are longer: Dream Theater or Phish?

I haven't heard Phish, but I assume they are a bit long as well? I have several friends who dislike DT because it puts them to sleep.
I am however an occasional listener, but I cannpt go through a whole DT album.

King Diamond - Abigail ( full album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9LtReyYaE0

This band along with Mercyful Fate ( same vocalist) are two bands which are of the black metal style, they produce mostly concept albums with each one narrating usually a tragic/evil story.

usually all of their concept albums have been amazing.

Personally, I prefer a deep growl over screaming and just plain gravelly-voiced singing; I can take it over select parts of a song (given proper context), just not the whole song. E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpyHWh4y9Ss
Ok, maybe I don't know the difference between screamo and growl like your link, I probably don't like either. It sounds silly to me but also I don't like the anger or negativity of it, much like I don't like gun nuts or to a lesser degree, FPS games.

The age comment was tongue-in-cheek, it hasn't really changed anything when it comes to music.

One thing I like about new Metal offshoots is the range and depth of grit and sound it has, like it's missing some midrange but has really meaty low end and crunchy chord work.

I like what little I know of bands like Avenged Sevenfold, have one of their albums, but this is an are of new territory for me.

Worlds apart, Phish are /were the next Grateful Dead / jam band, DT were like the next Rush / Dregs / etc. but you know them.

I too struggle with a whole DT album and prefer them song by song, though they put on a great, long concert, saw them a few times and while a lot of it sounds alike, it's well-put together stuff.

I don't think Phish have long songs, not like Yes or some other Prog Rock epics, just that live they jam on songs for a long time. Of what I've heard of Phish I really only like Billy Breathes and I like that a lot; I have another, studio album (probably missing the point with them) but don't like it.

I won't laugh at people because they listen to music that isn't metal or it's variants, or because it is too soft.
I liked this band Star One but not the female vocals, very progressive reminds me of so many bands of this genre.
Yeah I knew you wouldn't laugh, it was a self-deprecating comment, maybe I know the Star One still is borderline silly, but I still like it.

You might want to check out Arjen Lucassen's' regular' stuff with Ayreon, how I learned of the Star One project albums. I think that is close to some of what I think you listen to.

Re the female vox, I think the main singer, Floor Jansen, on the album versions her voice comes out really well. Check out the A Capella ending, sounds treated but I think it's mostly real voices. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FpMo9JGlxo

I'll post something better after a few responses, different band who I think kicks ass.

Oooh...I like them. Their songs feel like short films.

Here's another metal band with a black guy who growls and can still sing:
http://youtu.be/JiDnB-CrrNs

Slipknot started as a really scream-y, growl-y band but the vocalist, Corey Taylor turned out to be a pretty good singer. Typical metal band from the late 90's, lotsa screaming ( http://youtu.be/a6GNWxAjIY0 ) but then they suddenly released an acoustic track and people were surprised to find out it's the same band ( http://youtu.be/LvetJ9U_tVY ). After that they started to get more melodic without losing the grit. http://youtu.be/5abamRO41fE

The mixing of styles is certainly welcome but then we also to deal with something like this: http://youtu.be/WIKqgE4BwAY

And of course, you know you're old if the band you grew up with in your teens is now a dad band: http://youtu.be/kBPRVUG0kiQ

And even older if the songs you really liked are being sung by contestants of (insert name of current singing reality show) or...shudder...Glee...shudder.

That Killswitch sounded pretty good.

One of the things in response to RITM for mindblowing-type solos was this at 6:00, the song after the 2 minute intro is pretty damn good, though by comparison sounds a bit old skool.
Shadow Gallery - Stiletto in the Sand / War for Sale
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ctj2u0vgGE

A better example, from 5:30
Symphony X - Accolade II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Kb8SVgbzgM
Must be good with so many guys attempting this solo on YT, watching them do it shows how off-the-wall and technically challenging it is.

Nice, I liked that too. The striking thing to me is that they don't just pile in and do a thrash number, the composition is measured 'held back' and delivered in a very measured way. You'd almost imagine the vocalist had trained as a classical singer. His enunciation is extremely precise and clear. Everything is held back and hinged on his vocals.

(the gittar in the first half is really Iron Maiden :)]

Oasis - Wonderwall - Official Video

Funny. Couple of real haunted looking and damaged skag-heads. Channelling the Beatles of all things.

They should have ended up in the infantry on the front line in the Middle East, but somehow they ended up multi-multi-millionaires pumping out out this mawkish shite.

-- 1st heard this song, and them, walking into the then Replay store in Ngee Ann City back in c1994. 20 years on I haven't the build for Italian clothes, nor the emo-bandwidth for this north of England bollocks music.

Where's BillyB, he probably likes this stuff... lol ...

I have history with Wonderall but not for this forum to maintain anonynimity.

RATM take you time re that reply, I still haven't (no you) replied to JR's reply to my post on Metal 1-2 pages back.

And, I'm waiting to post something more mindblowing than what I did after all that.

That's what I like about this topic... just throwing out ideas/suggestions, without expectations.... no rush, there's links I haven't played from pages back yet either... but I will.

At least weekly I have a 'wow moment' from the suggestions made by others. It's priceless.

It might not be something I'd go and buy, but.. I definitely come away feeling more informed...

p.s. Blow me Brah is you aren't the Gallagher brothers estranged scally dad!
