Sonic booms

Post by JR8 » Thu, 31 Jul 2014 1:33 pm

Out of interest does anyone know what aircraft are flying around causing sonic booms?

I just heard two, about 5 seconds apart...

Thunder? :)

How close before the boom breaks windows? Seem to remember Concorde getting into trouble with that years back.

Hmmm, I'm no expert but, sonic booms have a pretty distinct sound, very brief and erm... sort of 'encapsulated', with a sense of being far far away. No sort of rumbling, and associated aftermath.

Yes as I recall Concorde did have such early issues. After which the crew didn't accelerate through the sound barrier until they were comfortably offshore. Problem solved.

--- I'd link a Youtube clip of a sonic boom and how it sounds, but it STILL seems to be down still, as it was this morning!!?

I have never knowingly heard one but would interested. I'm guessing they have to be somewhat offshore and a little careful given the number of islands around here. Don't really want to upset the neighbours.

It's like a veeery big gunshot. Sort of very big, but also short/discreet, if that makes sense.

Oh the military jets here are to and fro each day (esp during rush hour) to instil fear in both the locals and the neighbours.

... 1pm ('sheer coincidence') here they come again...

incursions happen quite regularly into singapore airspace and seas.
