Plane going around and around ...

Post by JR8 » Wed, 23 Jul 2014 12:59 pm

What's the light plane buzzing around in mid-town? Prop driven.

Back home you'd assume it's a TV channels light plane with traffic-cam. But they don't have that here... hmmm

Hopefully, not a drone in disguise.

That thought crossed my mind too. It went on for maybe 20 minutes, at c10-11 this am. If it were a prop-driven aeroplane, it'd be no more than 5,000 feet, that was the kind of volume/presence it had. Around and around... with me thinking 'WTH is this thing?'

Unusual.

The RSAF was showing off its drones at the airshow this year so it could very well have been a drone rehearsing for NDP.

It was overcast all morning, so couldn't see anything.

It was distinctive though. Usually when a plane goes over, you hear the arrival, then whoosh, the fly-past, then the exit.

With a chopper, you hear the 'whup-whup-whup', and the Doppler effect tells you where it is etc, coming or going. When I lived in Manhattan it was pretty common to have news choppers hanging in the sky nearby, and others doing loops around the city for tourists, and it sounded nothing like that.

This was like a small plane going around and around, and around. Very odd. If someone told me it was a just a microlight doing half an hour of low-altitude circuits around the neighbourhood, I'd probably believe them. But then... you don't seem to get civil air traffic over the city...

But don't they do this this time every year?

I remember watching some large prop recon / transport kind of plane last year circling around Marina Bay and further east.

if you live in certain areas on a daily basis you will see c130s, F5s (if they are still in use), occasionally a pair of F15s, and more regularly where I am, G550s ..

normal ops for Pay a Le bar/Tengah

JR8, where do you live?

occasionally the Seletar based training planes and the EC120 do transits over city ...

recently saw a B407 orbiting around Seletar and wondered, till I noticed and recognized the logo / decal .. using my 30x optical zoom camera ...

Hehehe....

Yes I've seen the fighters doing touch-and-go's at Paya Lebar. There usually are four of them, and they're all airborne and spread out in one huge loop over the east of the island... around and around they go.

I also remember seeing C130 type aircraft, probably doing NPD practise stuff, but not this year.

But what I described is much more local. You know, imagine a news chopper going around and around over one spot in a neighbourhood; well, like that. Never straying more than a couple of hundred metres from a central point (we're sort of mid-town/island).

At the risk of sounding nuts, it's just begun again, right as I type! :) :???:

[and stopped again, for now... ]
