Finally decided I am better off buying a full phone and internet plan. I got 20% corporate discount at Singtel. The "lite" plan comes with 2GB bundled data and also 100 mins outgoing a month @ $31.5 a month after discount. I also got HTC desire 610 free with the contract(24 month).

I am now planning to sell off the phone which I don't really like, I think I can get $270 for it. I will then just use the new SIM in my old phone.

You are right. Singtel sells both Redmi as well the other mi3:

http://www.mi.com/en/mi3

which is really a haute phone. I instantly fell in love with the phone. It cost $100 with the lowest version 2GB data plan. But then it struck to me, that these phones, you are better off buying without contract, you can get them for like $200, but the HTC Desire 610 although an ugly phone retails at $300. So its better to just sell off the Desire and then buy the Mi3 or the other phone I love Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE version with 2GB RAM, export set on race course road costs like $335 when I checked 2-3 months ago.

Wow, so you can still buy a G3, I thought it would be discontinued by now.

As mine is damaged, and I'm too cheap to buy a G4 / G5, I might just get one.

I must admit, I was considering the Mi because it looks slick and from the price. But I'm not the type to upgrade unless what I have is broken or obsolete.

When your primary plan is to use this instead of a home ISP, why are you even considering a non-LTE phone? You're not really *that* cheap, are you? :)

I have a proper 100mbps home ISP. This plan is only because of my new job and I need to travel by MRT 1 hr each way. If I was riding bike like my earlier job, I would have never got an mobile internet connection. Anyways this is really the cheapest plan with 2GB limit so its not for heavy use. Besides, for browsing facebook, SBS Iris, Gmail, I think LTE is an overkill. In fact my current prepaid SIM is 5 years old and its actually 2G and I have browsed the usual sites on it and its okay. Yes I am that cheap :)

G3 was available on MobileSquare website until like 2 months ago. Its a terrific buy, especially the LTE version, not because it is LTE but because it is 2GB RAM. The non LTE version is 1GB RAM. Even the flagship G5 is 2GB RAM and to me the biggest limitation in the phone performance is the RAM.

According to GSM Arena this phone is still available.

Ahh ok, for some reason I thought this whole thing was so you could avoid having an ISP at home. It's actually a decent plan if fiber isn't available in your place. My Singtel LTE was definitely faster than the Singtel MIO. Our corporate plan also gave each of us a 12GB LTE quota each shared amongst a pool of all of the people in our department. It's fair to assume 90% never used more than 2-3GB, leaving a lot more for a few potential leaches :)

I can recontract my current singtel lite plan and I am thinking what to do with it. I was briefly thinking about the mentioned mi3 but I read it had not a uSD card slot (no external storage at all).
Any other models, sub-$100 range worth attention?
How about Sony Xperia M2?

Yes I was also considering M2, its the only other nice phone sub 100. This phone costs $50 the lite plan whereas the HTC Desire 610 is free.

The retail prices for desire 610 is $300 and for M2 it is $328, so the desire felt like better value, since anyways I am planning to sell them off.

According to this review there isn't much to choose from these 2 phones, ultimately depends on whether you want HTC or Sony.

There was also LG F70 LTE, but I didn't like it, it had like 5M camera, not worth it.

EDIT: Just saw in the Singtel online shop, the Huawei Ascend G6 is also available for free, seems to be a nice phone especially if you like taking selfies. It has a 5M front camera.

You can also subtract $30 if you buy it online between 9pm-9am or on Wednesdays making this Xperia $28 effectively. For the HTC it is available in white and blue. Not particularly my favorite choice for a mobile phone.

You are right, but then you can't get the corporate discount(CIS) when you buy online. You just need to show your staff pass at the singtel shop to get the discount. My company I get 20% off on the monthly plan so $39 a month becomes $31.5 a month. But I checked online some of the locals companies(Singapore Airlines, Comfort Delgro,MOE etc) get 30% discount so it becomes $27.50 a month.

Don't worry; you probably won't anyway...with the invite-only system and everything else having been scalped.

Just sold the HTC Desire 610 for $270. So now the connection is effectively a SIM only plan that cost $20 per month for 24 months :)
