I might consider a 2nd hand dryer though.
How do you know what's decent and what isn't? By how shiny the outside is, or how clean the lint filter is? Or are you actually opening it up and looking at the motor, belts, springs, etc and inspecting them for fatigue?
Most people aren't going to let you take their washing machine apart to check it out.
I know that. It was a rhetorical question.

I'm sure you can successfully purchase used washing machines. The comparison was to an LED TV; My point was just that with moving parts you're going to have failures eventually. Other than broken buttons, the TV likely won't have a failure if you're not doing something crazy like operating it inside of a washing machine. :)

I've done it before. In the UK it would be called a 'reconditioned' machine. It gets taken back to the manufacturer, overhauled, cleaned up, and re-sold. It's usually about half-price and just fine to go into a rental.

There's a limited amount that can go wrong with a WM anyway. I've only ever had do two repairs, a) a drum-belt (like a fan-belt) and b) replacing the motor brushes.

On the flipside I don't think I'd want to start taking a TV apart, and suspect it's going to me mostly PCBs and the like.
