I'm 33. I won't go into details, but I dropped out of college and went straight into the IT workforce in 2000.

When considering resumes for open positions, I give almost no value to a degree. What you did in your last position that is relevant, and why you left are my biggest questions.

In quite a few instances, I've been in conversations like this:

Person: My husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/brother/sister/parent didn't go to college and is making good money working at [some clothing store or restaurant]. He/she makes more than lots of people with degrees.

Me: How many hours a week do they work?

Person: About 70 Hours.

Me: Do they get any benefits?

Person: No.
