Request your views on my job offer

Post by spaceman » Thu, 20 Feb 2014 3:25 am

Hi all,

I have received a job offer recently on which I request your views/inputs.

I work in India and my monthly salary before tax, is ~2000 SGD. There are other benefits given by my present company - health insurance, mobile, internet, project awards (cash), training budget (~10k usd per annum) and frequent travel across the globe. I save ~1400 SGD.

Now I recently have been offered a senior specialist role in Singapore for a large orgn. It is a 1 year contract work, and possibility of extension after it. I will be on payroll of SG's prominent recruitment firm & not directly with the end customer.

I am being offered 9000 SGD + health coverage + employment pass, by the firm. No relocation benefit, no flights, no accommodation support etc. Nothing else.

I am single and will be staying alone for most part. I drink socially only but do smoke often. I can cook and only occasionally go out to binge & splurge.
I am not a shopaholic either.

How do you see this offer? Should I consider it?

Depending on your housing expectations and your lifestyle you could probably save up to 6k (4-4.5k more realistic) from this salary but what you should be weighting against it is a job stability and future career development. 1y contract offered by some recruitment agency with no guaranty of extension may not be good enough to put it against what you have right now and what seems a decent and stable job.

Interesting that there is such a big disparity in income in your case. Typically someone who can make 9000SGD in Singapore, should be able to make atleast the equivalent of 4000-5000SGD in an Indian city, especially in IT. My guess is you are not from IT and hence the really big disparity. If I were you I would take the Singapore role. If someone is paying that much it means you are worth much more here than there.

Thanks!
This role is new but in alignment to my skills & prior experiences, so I think it will be a logical next step in my career progression. Also, the saving potential seems to be better here.

However, I understand, from some of my peers in SG, the work environment/culture is very strict, hence less of a job security. To compound it, this is contract work. If they like what and how I am doing things, I get 1 year and possibly an extension. If they don't, there is 1 month notice. So job security and stability on this offer is certainly something I am very concerned about.

I think staying a few years in same company, tends to put us in comfort zone & scared a bit to make any moves. I am open to taking this risk. Will it be worth it or not, I am not sure and so I seek your valuable inputs here.
