FDW has rotten teeth - check before you hire - no insurance!

Post by PNGMK » Mon, 27 Jan 2014 4:28 pm

FDW had a tooth ache. Q&M say either 3 tooth extractions (1 wisdom and 2 molars) or maybe 1 extraction (wisdom) 2 molar root canals (at $1000 each I guess).

What to do? According to the maid agency I only have to pay for extraction and medication (pain relief) and XRay... if she wants RCT I can ask her to pay (I guess from salary deduction) or transfer her back to the PI for local treatment there.

Any ideas here? Are there any FDW friendly dentists around? Q&M in TP is a pretty local place though.

Obviously the useless insurance doesn't cover this.

[Insert funny ironic phrase about not looking a gift horse in the mouth]

I'd personally cover it and tell her that's her bonus for the year. Maybe at least take her to JB or Batam to have it done and save a bit of money?

The travel is not worth the hassle although I thought of taking her to Thailand for the dental work while we are there for a holiday.

She's had at least 4 others removed already I can see on the Xray so what's few more?

Throw her on the back of your bike, I'm sure she'd love a quick trip to JB. :-)

Haven't tried it myself but I believe Thailand is very good for dental work, both quality and cost. In fact a friend of mine was told by his dentist to get the initial (expensive) work done up there to save himself some money.

Appreciate the tip I had not considered this. I have asked our direct hire maid to get herself off to the dentist in Philippines and have whatever she needs done before coming to Singapore.

It's a difficult situation...I've been thinking we should send out kind lady to the dentist...but on the other hand we will get stuck paying for the outcome of 30 years of poor dental hygeine. But on the other seems rather heartless not to help out.

The ignorance is appaling. I could tell by the local dentists attitude ("pull them all out and tell her to buy dentures back home") that this is a somewhat troublesome issue and that most employers pay the barest possible.

This is relevant to my interests. How on earth do you tell a grown woman she needs to brush her teeth before bed?

Breaking news; the adopted stray cat bit the toothless maid while the adopted child looked on in glee.

Oh the irony.

Filipino. I know she does them in the morning but never at night. I'm more than happy to pay dental but it does annoy me that she'll always have problems unless she cops on.

And that eating sugar from morning until night rots their teeth...this is when I get annoyed at being stuck with a 2K dental bill.
