Preposteously pretentious names

Post by JR8 » Fri, 29 Nov 2013 7:58 pm

Sometimes get amused by the westernised names here, esp. as people seem to give themselves these names (in adulthood).

They're used to buying Asian cars with nonsensical names and living in condos with nonsensical pseudo French names, what do you expect with Singlish powered English to work with and the penchant of never pronouncing the final consonant in most words. Come on, get WIF it.

I used to sometimes work with another team in my company where the two main contacts were called Elvis and Diamond. Both were men, Elvis I kind of get, Diamond is just bizarre tho.

global calls were funny when I had to introduce who was on the call. the number of times I got chatted by someone asking if they were really called that.

There seems to be a culture of men giving themselves.... er.... 'given names' in their .... mid 20s*

So Lim Boon Long Sieng Soh, suddenly becomes Elvis Lim, or similar,

It does seem to give rise to some preposterous [to western eyes] names, esp. on the female side.

* I have difficulty imagining a 'new name' for myself, and re-christening myself as such. Maybe someone could start a topic, 'What's your ideal SGn re-birth name'.

There are some names though that seem to be indigenous or not that common English names.
Example:
Alvin
Kelvin
Connie

No one in England has been called such names since about 1850. That's why it's so weird.

It's more ignorance than pretentiousness. Happens in Beijing and probably Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong as well: http://youtu.be/aZfDU4Frv9g

Once hired a receptionist in China. She was asked to choose an English name and she said, I will. Next day she was asked to change it again as it was deemed not too clever. She would pick up the phone and go: "This is the company x, I am Juicy, how can I help you".....

In Malaysia, there's a very popular Mando-pop singer that goes by Fish Leung. No joke. She's a good singer and writer despite of that silly name.

And then there are Apples and Cherries in large numbers here. (Go figure).

Few years ago, I met a girl from work and her name is Peis L (real surname omitted for privacy). You can Google her Linkedin.

There was once a girl in my university who went infamous because she called herself Gizzard G (she named herself after Gisele Bundchen). Last time I checked, she still had her Facebook account with that name.

And a dude who named himself Everett but pronounced his name as Envelope.

I've had colleagues named 'Happy' and one who carried the bright name Sun Tan.... might not be fun if you only speak Chinese but quite entertaining in English :)

Wonderful stuff!

I had a colleague called Richard Bend, but we all knew him as Dick Bender.

p.s. side-meme. People who grow into the extrovertness of their most unusual names.
