Medisave-MediSheild-Central Provident Fund - clarification

Post by annasilvia » Sun, 27 Oct 2013 5:47 pm

Hi All!

I'm new in this forum as I'll be moving to Singapore by the end of November because of my husband's new job. We are both Italian.
I was trying to find some information about the Health System in Singapore.
We don't have kids at the moment and my husband will have a medical insurance through his company (i'll probably be added)...anyone of you has experience with Medisave or Medisheild or CPF? I'm a bit confused...What are they? Can we apply as expats?
:???:
Thank you for helping
Anna

:)

Medisave, Mdishield & CPF are only for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. These are NOT available to Employment Pass, Dependent Pass or LTVP/SVP holders.

CPF is the locals pension scheme, I can't imagine you're interested in that, or entitled to it.

The medical insurance issue, your husbands contract should outline what it is.

Thank you JR8, but unfortunately we are not PR.
We will apply for it in the future.

If you were PR, you (probably) wouldn't be being offered an expat package. Circular isn't it? :)

Generalising:
Local - gets salary + benefits + CPF
Expat - gets Salary*3 + benefits*3 + extras

I got posted to a few countries. It was, in retrospect, a nightmare being enrolled into the local pension scheme/CPF. You leave after 2 years, the balance is worth nothing really, a few hundred, but you can't just walk away. Cue: hours of work trying to figure out how you can extract anything of value out of it. Finally you're told you have to pay tax on it, or, leave it for 40 more years.
