"So Called"

Post by Barnsley » Tue, 08 Oct 2013 1:16 pm

It seems to be a popular term here....

Just sat through a presentation where our Sales guy used it every other sentence. It just sounded unnecessary has anyone else noticed its excessive use anywhere or is our guy an exception?

I can understand if its coming from a sales guy. He probably wants to put down the competition, so he use sentences like: He is a "so called" manager in a "so called" MNC, but I make more money than him :D

Yeah I hate it... it's a linking word or sound to keep listeners attention while the cogs whir away upstairs in the empty room.

It's only a way of saying something about someone or something without making it sound like it actually comes from you.

Usually derogatory it washes the hands clean of any responsibility.

Nobody takes responsibility for sh!t these days and this is where much of the so called problems come from. :P

Ah, but that would be the correct use of the phrase. I believe that the OP has spotted the new, improved Singapore version.

As I understand it, one is to use the words 'so-called' to preface any vaguely technical-sounding or unfamilair terms.

For example "I am posting this message on a so-called 'expat forum'. I am currently typing from my so-called 'futon' but will be going out shortly to visit the so-called 'zumba instructor' who has just moved in next door."

zumba instructor ? WOW .. :)

Well, from my experience here, it is to indicate the latter .. in your example .. ;) not the former .. :)
