Wood stain or paint

I want to tidy up the internal doors in our HDB apartment. It looks to me as though the finish (wood stain or paint) is a pretty standard HDB finish.

Anyone know what it is? I am going to ask the local paint merchant but thought I would ask here also.

It it's what I'm used to it's a coloured varnish that is just crap for longetivity and recoating. If you really have the time sand back to the wood. The wood here is usually meranti (I think) which is not really great at taking paint.

Oh OK, it really didn't look like a varnished finish but could be. I don't think I have the patience to sand back to wood (and of course its not my apartment, just renting!). I will try re coating and see what happens.

I used a dark coloured varnish on the front door after the paint throwing visit from the money lender and have to say it took three coats to cover the old colour

Does anybody know where to buy reasonably priced water based wood stains? I am looking for a dye dissolved in water, not a colored water based varnish. DIY stores offer solvent based one, with miserable choice of colors (1-2 only) and ridiculous price ($30 for 250 or 500ccm). They are good as of staining power but covering a single piece of small furniture would probably tripple its price.

Ikea in tampines sell the stains they use on furniture.

They are varnish based unless something has changed from 2 years back when I tried them.

In that case could you not make some in the manner of a limewash?

Limewash is a bit too light. I would need something darker and more homogenous. Darker-mahagon-ish perhaps. But repeating the google search after few yers is not a bad idea and this is what I have just found:
