Really? So, your mom was born in Nazi Germany. Fascinating.

A lot of state documents from countries under German occupation at that time, will have German 'Nazi' stamps on them.

Birth certificate from any German occupied country, during WW2 - sure that's how it was. After all, you were now a German.

Exactly - she was born in Nazi occupied territory.

It is, and it's precisely as you suggest an intentionally distasteful affront. [Refer to my earlier posts about how Malcolm McLaren exploited the Sex Pistols, to make millions via precisely this route (Refer further : 'The Rock and Roll Swindle' etc)

But then I suspect some people here, occasionally leaving their 'Hello Kitty' festooned worlds find it cute, funny, a little risque (whilst not knowing why).

Hannieroo wrote:As an aside, is it not banned? I am sure it was banned in the UK as an incitement to riot and a breach of the peace. In the same way a tshirt with a racial hate slogan would be.

It's sure as hell legally banned in Germany (surprise). Don't know bout the rest of Europe... most countries have 'freedom of expression'...

I'm disgusted. i haven't seen any but if I do I will be bloody picking them off. That symbol filled the graveyards of Europe and it's not cool, not ironic and most certainly not something to aspire to.

I've ben sat trying to run through the scenarios where my 15 year old comes downstairs with that on a shirt. And I'm incapable of thinking of a scenario where he thought it was something to display and where I let him walk out the door. " That's a nice shirt, son, where are you going? Oh, to watch the latest snuff movie and then kill puppies? Okay have fun, got your mrt card?" FFS.

No you have it wrong. When he walks downstairs with his skanky goth girlfriend and they are both wearing Nazi symbols....

Well, obviously, in that scenario we'll just be relieved he's not gay and wave them off.

Yep, nothing worse than a ghey nazi son. Oh hang on, a ghey nazi son who aspires to be a landlord. That would be worse.

I believe they (the locals displaying it) have no slightest idea. It's just a neutral or positive symbol for them. I don't think they would use it realizing people like them (dark skin, far from the Aryan uber race) were among the firsts in the queue to the gas chambers.

Yes, it's illegal I guess pretty much everywhere in Europe.

I just don't understand how it's moved along so quickly. My father was born before the war, my grandfathers fought in it and my husband's family are the same so for us it's still first hand history. It was a world war and I'm assuming the generations here are the same. It's not Logan's Run. So, what are they not teaching?

We are in Asia, and lets be honest Hitler and his merry band, did not really make much of an impact here.

Raise the rising sun flag and that will get the locals riled up, so much so in a recent case, a new office building in Shanghai had to change its design, because the big round opening in the facade, which from a western perspective looks pretty cool, upset the locals who claim it was the rising sun symbol. http://postfiles1.naver.net/20120403_20 ... if?type=w2

As I noted earlier, they don't cotton to the meaning as it applies to the westerner. However, they have a similar revulsion to the Rising Sun for Japan's roll in WWII.

Well, that's ridiculous. They need to review that history curriculum.

It probably gets about as much attention as regional genocides get in western text books. I don't recall my high school text books devoting more than a page or three to Japanese atrocities, or much at all to the negative impacts colonialism had in this region.

I would expect it is in the curriculum. It is just for them emotionally indifferent from all the other subjects including Blackbeard. Somewhere, some time ago in some remote place, some white people war.

Japanese Rising Sun flags are readily sold in the US actually.
