Why all the Nazi stickers on cars and bikes

Post by katbh » Sun, 23 Jun 2013 10:56 am

And I am not talking about religious swastikas but real nazi stickers - with Nazi often written on them. Don't people see the irony?

No, they don't. They think it's just another emblem.

Like how some people don't know who Che or Mao is.

I haven't seen those but I confronted a kid wearing a real Nazi swastika t-shirt a couple of years ago. He was pretty blur about it. I'm sure he's still wearing it.

Saw another one a few weeks back on Orchard. Didn't bother, gave up caring or enlightening the ignorant and moronic.

There's a Nazi-themed bar in Indonesia: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2011 ... stika.html

They don't. If you go to the countries like Burma you can also see people riding motorbikes dressed in German WW2 helmet replicas like this one:

completely oblivious to the historical irony.

It is a case of ignorance or ambivalence.

It being knowingly being used as a 'style-icon' is probably ignorance. Most doing do so probably don't know what it means, or represents. Maybe youths out in Asia might associate the swastika with 'punk', rather than it's original purpose... ?

Another angle is knowing something of what it means, but seeking to shock (immaturity etc). In an opening scene of the Sex Pistol's film 'The Great Rock and Roll Swindle', Sid Vicious staggers about central Paris wearing a t-shirt with a huge swastika on it, intentionally terrifying the wits out of very elderly passers-by. Paris was of course occupied by the Germans in WW2. That was ambivalence (or more so an intention to shock and provoke, as was the Sex Pistols entire modus operandi).

Mostly it is pure ignorance. They see it similar as to the punks in the US with the skull & crossbones. Remember, these people are not tuned into European History as much as Asian History. They associate with the rising sun rather than the swastika.

However, having said that, the Swastika with the outriders going in the opposite direction is cultural here with the Chinese and is religion associated I believe (like the red swastika society).

So, as a westerner, or moreso, European, you will just have to compartmentalize it.

I don't recommend going around and ripping off of cars, etc unless you want to find yourself badly set upon if you get caught. You can also be charged with vandalism as well.

And she did it in Peru, home of the Maoist terrorist group 'Sendero Luminosa'.

Wow, that faux pas ranks pretty high! :o

I remember being surprised seeing a swastika in colorful lights on one of the windows at the condo back in December. I also have seen others occasionally.

I then did some reading online and found that the swastika can have a religious meaning in Asian culture, as one of the previous posters said:

I'm suddenly reminded on Jane Fonda fraternising with the enemy in North Vietnam during the war.

Though I suspect Cameron Diaz is simply naive, rather than a communist sympathiser...

Additionally the Asian red swastika will always rest on a flat and not on a point as does the Nazi one.

The Red Swastika School was founded by the World Red Swastika Society (Singapore Administration Centre), a religious and charitable organization.

You can notice their logo is different from NAZI.

World Red Swastika Society logo is straight while NAZI is 45 degree rotate.
