Tipping at a Hair Salon

Postby uscate » Fri, 10 May 2013 8:19 am

I'm having a fairly expensive salon treatment with a 20% tip in the $80-$90 range. This is a fairly hefty tip (IMO)....is tipping in hair salons common here? I don't want to stiff my hairdresser on a large sum of $$, but neither do I want to part with it all if tipping is not done (I more than likely will leave some amount).

Thanks for the input!

Let you conscience be your guide? This has been touched on a number of times over the the years but nothing has ever been "guidelined" as it were.

Hi SMS - I researched this site before posting, thinking that there would be some standard I could latch onto, but to no avail....In the US I typically tip 20%, and this is considered the norm. I was just hoping that someone who has had experience with more expensive treatments here could give me some advice as to what is expected....Although I guess $2 on a $10 haircut does tell me that 20% is typical, for haircuts at least.

If anyone else cares to weigh in, I'd be interested in their perspective, otherwise I'll just go with the tried and true 20%.
