Hmmmm, IMHO this doesn't really work for me. I appreciate that the Japanese are great acquisitors and innovators... but.

Ska is a musical genre, that involves Jamaica, and experience of the 'West Indian culture'. The Japanese might be able to replicate it, but I doubt they'll ever 'get it'.

I was old enough the live through the ska revival in the UK (often termed '2-Tone' music, as 2-Tone Records was the UK ska revival record label). Bands like The Specials, The Selector (etc), even Madness was at least partially ska based. I even got to see Bad Manners live ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Manners ... lead vocalist: named Buster Blood-Vessel, was huge and bald and during a concert would routinely stick out a wiggle his outrageously long tongue (maybe 3"/8cm outside of his mouth!).
http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/4461/photojww.jpg [that's UK radio DJ Chris Evans on the left if I'm not mistaken].

Interesting times. But a Japanese nostalgia band aren't going to help me relive them...

(I remember when I lived in Tokyo, going to see a band styled as 'The Japanese Beatles'. It was hilarious, but for all the wrong reasons. They had the vague clothes, could roughly do the songs, but looked nothing like them and sung in Japlish lol... )

Interesting, I don't think I've heard of it, but it's been around a while so it must have a solid following.

One thing from their site concerned me a little though:

------------
'Staying true to our belief in bringing the freshest sounds to Singapore shore, we have invited some of the most cutting-edge DJs from all over the world to take over the decks at Home. All of them being respected names in the underground music scene, they include Mercury Prize winner and drum and bass pioneer Roni Size, affluent DJ, producer, artist and actor Goldie, Kele Okereke of platinum record-selling UK indie band Bloc Party, Al Doyle of Grammy-nominated electropop band Hot Chip, three-time World DMC Champion DJ Craze, founder of Good Looking Records, DJ and producer LTJ Bukem.'
--------------

But so what. I can invite (their word) George Bush, The Queen, The Sultan of Brunei, Eddie van Halen, Frank Zappa, and Michael Jackson over.... but that fact in itself means zero. Who have they actually hosted?

p.s. try e-mailing and asking them :). I bet you get the 'rabbit in a headlight' response, and then some bullshot obfuscation...

Laters!

Wow to be able to sing like Morten Harket of A-Ha. So nimble, and those 'power-rises' he does ...

Just wow...

p.s. Karaoke it, or just try and sing along with his breathing pattern and you'll see what I mean. Now try it at the volume he is on this recording.... right yah? :)

Blimey that was interesting, they're Norwegian too.

I'm not sure I'd describe that as 'gothic metal', assuming that means a blend of goth and metal!

It has a real foundation in house music, with a light touch of metal-style power rythmn-guitar going on. So maybe metal-house... or maybe just house, but with some heavier guitar in it..?

Thx, interesting. I'd never heard of them before.

They started off initially as a proper gothic band with high pitched female vocals and power chords, later they progressed to a more disco goth style
what you heard was the newer stuff.
their older stuff is something like this

I had the same feeling about Japanese and ska, but I was wrong, i've been listening to them a fair bit and having watched their shows on youtube they put on a great show and gaining popularity everywhere

That being said, the concert is sold out at the esplanade btw :-|
Either everyone in Singapore is a Jap-ska fan or there is an obsession linked with anything Japanese.

I couldn't go last night, I wasn't up for it, but the only thing that intrigued me was they play psy trance, now I wonder if that holds a candle to the stuff that is played in Goa.
I also wonder when they say underground, I hope they don't mean obscure.

Not sure why the singing on that made me think of this:
Little Feat - Voices On The Wind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkIFIN-RQcc

To be fair, it's before I've had my coffee....

And for yet another reason all that made me think of this:

A great live version which really shows off Raul Malo's amazing voice

Yanni or Barry Manilow would have a sell-out concert in SG too ;)

Anyway, if you get there I hope you have fun!

Tell the 'special one' casually in passing that it seems a lot of money, but it's worth it for you to get to experience them live together with her.

Then hopefully you'll get some quality 'payback' when you get home afterwards, which will help make the outlay worthwhile

Of course by "Jap" you didn't mean the racial slur, right?

How many times do people need to be reminded that it's very uncool to use that term? Rhetorical question.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow
If you excuse the growling vocals the music is pretty nice , some very melodic solos

Clubbed to death - Matrix soundtrack

Jeez, must have been 15-20 years ago. Great stereo separation, per th original.

I think the original back then was Spanish (p.s. this is the original here, just branded as 'The Matrix Theme'. Well yes, but it started out as a club anthem, many many, many years before the Matrix films...)...

Caracal, a local band, very alt, very real, I love them, and respect them hugely.

They're sort of riding a '77-82 wire, as much as they are artistically able to do so, and the music is just great.
