Art

Perhaps a little nook where we can chat about art?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ8AIIAgYpg
Simon Schama's Power of Art - Rothko, part 1 of 7

I just wanted to share this, as I find Rothko's paintings curiously moving. They have a depth and almost hallucinatory liveness*, that their apparent simplicity far belies.

* Hard to explain as I can't say I've experienced it before. It's not the astonishing but brutal message of Munch, or Bacon, but I'd like to think I get it.

Edvard Munch - Madonna and foetus

Image

This is from c.1885 and one of many versions he did of the subject.

It's incorrect to think of challenging art as somehow 'contemporary', and bask in a kind of sense of getting something new which the plebs won't. It's not. I still find this subject matter challenging, and that's 130 years later.

Used to have 'The Scream' on the back of my bathroom door facing towards the toilet. So only when guests sat down did they notice, and get it staring at them.

Speaking of Edvard Munch, I'm reminded by another one of his paintings (aside from the famous "The Scream").

Moon Light

Image

The reason this painting strikes me because I keep having Moon River song playing in my head looking at it. Pretty contrasting if you try to put the Munch's effect and Hepburn's voice together...

I like that one, and as it happens have a copy hanging in my hall! But he must have done several versions (a habit of his it seems). The version I have has a group of four women dancing on the shoreline.

Hey maybe they are dancing to Moon River? :)

Another one I have in the hall ... Georgia O'Keefe, probably an early one (c. 1940, i.e. before she lost it and went to Mexico)

I was in a gallery in Greenwich Village, NYC (Martin Lawrence Gallery: his estate's agent). I had a choice of a Haring or a Warhol. I wanted something to remember NYC by. I sat with them side by side in their little low-light 'close the deal' ante-room...

I then took a two hour lunch away from the 'power-sell' at the gallery to think.

Hmmm.... I just bought what i enjoyed visually. But if now looking back say 20 years later what would you have bought?

I dont personally find Rothko's work interesting, but i was once in a gallery with a friend from Poland who started crying after seeing his paintings. That was a weird experience :-|
