Ah, sweet memories of highway 41...
That was sweet, and doubly so as it's a band that have never really crossed my radar... good stuff! Am I right that you have the lead on a Gibson-semi-acoustic, and rythmn on a Les Paul? Is that normal (I honestly have no idea, but am used to seeing the LP on lead I suppose).

To me, rightly or wrongly that's like country rock. Very slick performance though, veeery tight, assuming it's fully live (it looks it). Maybe just a little long to me, but back i the day it was a big big song so I understand that.

Nice one! :)

Are there any rock bars in Singapore?
Hi, thanks for the suggestions. Could you post what you consider representative links from Youtube; much better than me searching for a randon link of a band I've never heard of, to seek your point :)

White Stripes and Zepp I know, but always interesting anyway, to see what people suggest/link to an audience of mostly the silent readers.

Rock bars. There's commercial stuff down a Clarke Quay like Yello. Also a pretty fantastic tranny who fronts a band down there at another club (might sound funky but is it honestly good and serious fun! (IIRC they are called 'Jive Talkin'').

There is meant to be some music/biker bar, somewhere out around East Coast, Seletar, Siglap... 'that way'. Maybe ask some of the ol' timers like SundayMorningStaple or StrongEagle... between them I'm sure they know what I have in mind...

Interesting re your comment on the Les Paul vs. the ES335 - Dickie was always a Les Paul player, not here though. Too bad his excellent chops suffered after all those years of too much alcohol.

That clip was from the 90s, over 20 years after it came out and after considerable changes in the band lineup. I don't recognize half of them, though they sound good in a different way.

This one is closer (thanks to the reason to look!) to the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WGVW7byRCA
At that time Dickie took over as the lead after Duane and Berry died (the story behind Eat a Peach). The original on Brothers and Sisters (a Desert Island Album) is still the best though.

well... here you go:

eagles of death metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d25fVFv0YRM

Electric Wizard (these guy are quite frightening, I ex-gf wouldn;t even let me listen to them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9MTscBEb3g

COME MY FANATICS!

Strange really, I used to listen to nothing but house/techno at university. Then at some point I seem to have woken up and though "wait a minutre..this is sh!t." Then went back to my father's vinyl collection and listened to to that: Beatles, The Who, The Doors, Frank Zappa etc etc. Then moved on into punk, rockabilly (Stray Cat are pretty good), then finally metal. I play the guitar if anyone fancies a jam (beer is obligatory). Strangely, altho I can pay rock/metal, I mostly play Brazilian jazz... Stan Getz, Joao/Astrud Gilberto etc.... bossac nova basically.

In keeping with the Southern / Country Rock thing. As usual with me, some are not the standard stuff you tend to hear from them on the radio:

Flying Burrito Brothers - Christine's Tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BITiY8M_oDo

Before Timothy B Schmidt left for the Eagles:
Poco - High and Dry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPMadlXtfE0

Yep, the Eagles did Country Rock:
Eagles - Midnight Flyer / California Jam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1C9UBp9zN8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Few know this kick-ass one from them:
The Doobie Brothers - Neal's Fandango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsvqK4A3X48

Allman Brothers - Dreams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK_5cJpM06k

The Marshall Tucker Band - Searchin' For A Rainbow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKvkZnF1MY

The mastery of Toy Caldwell's unique guitar style:
Marshall Tucker Band - Take The Highway (Live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZvGga2p65o

New Riders of The Purple Sage: Panama Red: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl1SmVET58E

These have killer Pedal Steel Guitar licks

Loggins And Messina - Angry Eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhiU74cFLDo

Decades later they still sound great after reuniting:
Loggins And Messina ANGRY EYES live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFM-VaUO_CE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Outlaws - There Goes Another Love Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5ptavYnUBM

Not one of their more well-known ones, killer fills at 00:59-01:01 and blistering guitar solo at 2:12
Outlaws - Cry No More*: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i0VKKl6xlI

Wow (laughing! (at my own lack of knowledge as anything else)), that's really nice!

p.s. Gibson-Central eh! :)

Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home - 1969

Just wow.

The funny thing (to me) is that the first time I heard them I was staying with a friend in NYC, so i strongly associate them, it, and this song with that trip 25+ years ago. It was a quite a shock to subsequently find out that they are Brits! :)

Hey Brah, thanks for the Southern / Country Rock fest; I really enjoyed those tracks. It's funny how devisive country music can be - a lot of people I know say they don't like it, but then when you play or mention some tracks to them they go "Oh, I like that stuff, I just hate country music." :) I guess part of the problem is the 'sh!t-kicker' image, kind of epitomised by that scene in the Blues Brothers when they're in Bob's Country Bunker and the lady says "Oh, we like both kinds of music here..." (Country and Western).

I think you'd enjoy that BBC documentary on Southern rock. It's disappeared from iPlayer, but I found it on YT:

Sweet Home Alabama - The Southern Rock Saga

And here's some more music back at ya...

My favourite Poco track: Rose of Cimarron. Love the orchestral arrangement on that.

New Riders of the Purple Sage - On My Way Back Home. A bit wimpy maybe (although I do like the peddle steel work), but it always gives me goosebumps as it was used in the 70s as the closedown track for a certain offshore radio station that I listened to (a lot). (And still do for that matter).

Something a little more up to date: Indigo Girls - Little Perennials. We saw them when they came to Singapore a couple of years ago but they didn't play that one unfortunately. Still a good show though IMO.

Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice. I expect you know the story about this one, basically it's all about the sh!t-storm they got into for daring to question 'W' and Cheney's bigotry and their hare-brained Iraq war.

Last but not least, my favourite Steve Earle track: Copperhead Road

BTW, I agree that the original version of Ramblin' Man is the best; I just threw in the live version for a bit of variety.

BTW2, isn't that Jackson Browne playing with the Eagles on Midnight Flyer? I know he was very close to the band in terms of song-writing, etc.

... Oh, and those Outlaws tracks were great, especially the superb guitar work on Cry No More. I saw them in the UK in 1976 (on the same bill as The Who, believe it or not) and then spent about six months trying to get hold of a copy of Breaker Breaker, which IIRC was their current US single at the time. We were all just starting to get into CB radio, which was, ahem, slightly less than legal at that point in the old country. I gave up trying to find the single and the cost of the album on import was too much for a poor schoolboy like me.

Just thinking, expressions like "getting the album on import" will have zero meaning to the mp3 generation. Oh well.

Holy crap, I haven't listened to Bauhaus in years. Pete Murphy has a quite remarkle voice, did "Maxwell...break the sound barrier" tv advert IIRC.
