Buying a European sized bed frame?

Post by SingLaw » Sat, 05 Jan 2013 2:12 pm

Does anyone have a clue where I might be able to find a European sized bed frame in Singapore? We brought our mattress (160 x 200) but not our bed frame and now we can't seem to find any bed frames to fit a 160 x 200 bed.

Is there an international bed specialist that I just haven't stumbled along yet?

Oh, and I already checked Ikea. They only have the largest size (180 x 200) in the European sizing. The rest are standard Singapore sizes.

I had my bed frame made to measure by Pasadina in Dempsy. Not cheap.

Harvey Normans here can make any size of bed, a bloke called Daniel in the Millennia Walk branch has always been very helpful.

Try BO Concept. Definitely European sizes.

How can you be sure that Ikea Singapore has European sized beds based on your US experience?

You could try Craigslist. Sometimes there are really nice beds being sold by people going home. Obviously a bit hit and miss, but an option.

Unless you have one of those super duper expensive mattresses, have you considered switching that instead?

Just saying because bed/mattress/linen size variations almost drove me crazy when I moved in, until I gave up figuring out how the system works.

As far as I can tell, you have an Asian standard, a European standard and an American standard. They are all slightly different with no two measures matching so as to make every fitted sheet in your cupboard either too loose or too tight in slightly different ways. Add that to the fact that department stores import linen from random places, so everything you buy may or may not fit who knows, really. So I bought an Asian king size (wish it was a bit longer but hey...) and a bunch of white fitted sheets (Asian size) - it seems to work.

If I lie straight out, my feet hang over the end of our new SGn bed (Courts).

When you try a mattress they don't provide pillows. When you have pillows (real life) your head is a few inches lower than abutting the head-board. On a shop tester bed you get closer the head-board by instinct. Beds here are definitely shorter than Europe/US in my experience.

Tall people might want to be aware of this 'catch'...

p.s. the various IKEA websites in various countries all carry size charts for their bedding products. Well worth studying and considering before you buy.

They are roughly 6 inches shorter than a US mattress. This is also a problem when people insist on bringing their beds over with them. The newer condo bedrooms are so small that when you put in a US bed frame you have to walk sideways around the bed!

I have exactly the same problem. I'm not abnormally tall at 1,82m, but have to confess (this is actually a bit sad, now that I look at it head on) that I've slept with my feet hanging out the end of the bed for not an insignificant percentage of my life. Life's little ways of having a laugh, I'm sure...

Also in SGn (and elsewhere) show-homes, where they put in 2/3 or 3/4 sized furniture. Relying on brief first impressions you don't notice it. It's just visual trickery!

I sympathise! (I think this place/condo is the first time I will ever have to endure this problem).

Just to add on, there's another custom furniture maker called Barossa Furnishings - http://www.barossasingapore.com/ - a friend of mine had them restore her teak table, she was happy for the workmanship. If you get them to create a bed frame from scratch, I don't think it'll be cheap - it might be more cost effective to get a pre-made bed frame and mattress (in which case you can try Tilam King - http://tilamking.blogspot.sg/). Also, you can try browsing the listings on this website - http://furnituresingapore.net/ - they have a number of local furniture shops listed.
