WiFi connection

Post by Steve1960 » Thu, 27 Dec 2012 1:22 pm

We have multiple products at home connected to our wireless router. iPad2, Samsung Tab 2 and four mobile phones.

I bought a cheap Toshiba tab as a gift for one of my wife's relatives but we cannot seem to get it to connect to the router. It finds the network, connects then just stops at 'requesting IP address'. Currently we are updating it and downloading items of interest over 3G which is painfully slow!!

Any ideas on what settings I should check on the router and / or tab?

Maybe you can check if the router MAC Address filter settings is enabled/ disabled. also have you tried rebooting the tablet?

Also try the tablet on a different wifi network (but not the Wireless@SG/SGx ones) to see if it works.

Great thanks for the ideas will try them this evening. My own IT department also suggested to check the encryption types match between the Tab and router as they say its a common problem for Tab's running Android.

Unless this information: requesting IP address is wrong (unfortunately it may happen) it means that the authorization part is done so this should not be anything related to MAC or encryption type. If it is correct the only reason I could think about is a set limit to the dhcp clients. It may be defined as a range i.e. 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.10. In such case try to increase the range to 192.168.0.20 (in this example). Other than this, I would second the suggestion of your IT dept. If you use wpa2 there can be mismatch of the ciphers.

ok, here's what you can try...

turn off the wireless router for 1 minute and then on again. go into the router configuration and turn off/disable wireless encryption. check on the tosh tab can connect and surf the net, etc. so this will prove the tosh tab wireless is working OK.

(also check if you ran out of IP range as set in your router, or if you are using MAC address filtering, and maybe change the channels of your wireless router)

if it is still not working, i suggest changing a different SSID and encryption key. good practice is to write down the SSID and encryption key and stick it on the router. even for me, sometimes i forget what's the encryption key is when visitors want to connect to my router.

make sure you turn on/enable your wireless encryption, otherwise you are providing free wifi for everyone around you!

To add/amend Durain's advice:

If you turn off encryption to troubleshoot, turn it back on when done. You don't want a free-loader to download childporn over your Wifi. Don't laugh, Swat teams have raided houses in the US over this when it was a neighbor doing the downloading!

Also, if you're using WPA2 (which you should - WEP is as "secure" as a "No Solicitors" sign on your front door), you set a passphrase that is at least 8 characters. No need to write it down, just make it something you can remember. "MyWifiIsVerySecure" or "NoChildPornHere!" would be acceptable.

i hate to say it, but technology, a little like mr God, works in mysterious ways.

my wife got an xperia ray from singtel, and nothing we did made it hook up with our home wifi network.

we gave up after 2 months of trying daily. we tried everything.

then suddenly... one day after giving up, i tried it again... and it just worked.

It's a real risk. While we waited to have the net account up and running at home (SG) I simply used a dongle and surfed on the back of neighbours wi-fi. Usually the laptop would detect maybe 20 active connections and there were always 2 or 3 good quality connections which were unsecured.

You've been warned!

Fixed. The router and tab were set to different encryption methods.

I had the tab 'forget' the router, changed the encryption setting on the tab then had it find the router again. Connected immediately.

Your tab should have automatically detected the proper encryption type. Did you manually change it (accidentally?) when first connecting? Anyway, see if there is a software update.
