The Who - My generation
Woodstock

p.s. Like this. I often get more when a band does 'improv' than when they simply repeat a studio version

Jimi Hendrix-Star Spangled Banner
(Woodstock 1969)

p.s. I remember many years ago a commentary something like 'Some people got upset with his version of the The Anthem. But you know, he did it because he loved it and what it stood for'.

A comedy/spoof version of Rage Against the Machine's track 'Killing in the name', done in a Sinatra/Brat-pack/crooner style by:

'Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine'

I'll refrain from posting a link as it has 'adult lyrics'. Anyone who enjoys the original will find it on Youtube with little difficulty.

p.s. How ever much I occasionally feel I must have 'heard it all', something comes along and knocks that thought right out of my head! :)

Amyst - Rolling In The Deep (Adele Screamo Cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAFs1Sae2JQ

I was looking for a live cover version of this that I'd seen that knocked my socks off a couple of years ago (Jools Holland Show? something like that).

Anyway, no joy with that. But what I DID find was this 'Growling' version of the song. No, I'd never heard of 'screamo' - per the link - as a style descriptive either but surprisingly it seems quite common on YT versions.

I recall I heard the heavy covers before I even heard it was her track.... oh what a surprise that was (as she is far far oh very very far away from my cup of tea! :)

p.s. Eh, Uncle-Mod, you and I know someone who might enjoy this too ;)

pps. Yep another 4-chord song

Todd's Zappa-ish Death Of Rock and Roll: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybWRodOpoDQ

Just the other day I got a call from a friend
I heard what you been playin' and I think it's a sin
Why can't you make a living like the rest of the boys
Instead of fillin' your head with all that synthesized noise?

Jackals wait nearby, watching rock and roll die
And no one dared tried to help it, vultures fill the sky

I thought we was supposed ta, supposed ta be free
But we all got sold - It must be the death of rock and roll

The critics got together and they started a game
You get your records for nothing and you call each other names
Things got out of hand and somebody got sore
Now we're all tuning up for the Rock and Roll War

Time to take up sides, helping rock and roll die
Pick up your check at the window
No one left to cry

An Elpee's Worth Of Tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLslLszuue8

Who's that on the racks again?
A portrait of a crazy man
Trying to make a living off an elpee's worth of toons
A picture of a soul in pain
Trying to change the world with an elpee's worth of toons

There's something at the heart of it that's simply awful
A man who makes a living off a plastic waffle

Sweat is forming on my brow
Not a thing can help me now
My life is on the line for an elpee's worth of toons

I can see the write-ups now
The multitudes are crying for an elpee's worth of toons

A man would simply have to be as mad as a hatter
To try to change the world with a plastic platter

....And of course we all know The Buggles Video Killed The Radio Star offering.

re: first two links. Quite.... so blah what. This is why punk did such a service to music, by cleaning out the bloated complacent nonsense that dominated everything. The arrival of Grunge and the likes of Nirvana repeated the function.

The TR track DoRnR. I liked that and I don’t think I’ve heard that before. So many thanks for that. There are some real Zappa lyrical influences in there which came as a surprise to me. Nice.

re: An Elpee's Worth Of Tunes:
Defo never heard this one before!? [I am hear right now instinctively saying out loud... ‘What... what.... !?’ lol!]. What is it, who is it for? He must have had confidence in an assured fan-base to be producing stuff like that, or B) was tripping or C) just did it for his own whimsy, or ...

Very unexpected either way. And either way I learn and grow, so thx!

p.s. The Buggles? Will ya'pass the sick bag already ah?

Oops, those first two went in by accident, the Genesis was in response to the E-Bow post as it's a good example if it in use. That music was still relevant for its time, thoui towards the beginning of Prog's death spiral. There was still a strong market for it then, judging from me and my tribe's level of interest at the time, and musically still well respected by respectable musicians. Phil Collins is / was actually a very accomplished drummer.

The other was for my last post in a separate thread.

Todd always worked outside if the music industry and stayed true to his purpose, which is why he's publicly so underrated but has always had such a loyal cult fan base. While I'm not so sure Zappa was an influence of his, there are some similarities in how they pursued their visions and maintained their integrity.

The Buggles was there among the many critics, some with quite prescient insight to what was to come, of the music industry.

What's key about those two from Todd are the time they came out, and the album that AEWOT is on is really best heard start to finish, I think the whole album is on YT. To answer your question, it's A,B and C.

re: Amyst.

My wife walked into the study, heard it and 180'd right back out. And she was sort of really animated and boiling in how much she 'hated' this.

Funny. Can't say I've seen her react like that about anything before. And bear in mind she has been to ACDC and Motorhead with me with me and loved it (she bought the 'DC' tickets)

Hey well, women. Who knows eh? :???:

Didn't I - Todd Rundgren

What should I find appealing in this 'blah'? Sounds to me like a band who think they've arrived, got complacent and years later are left pressing the $-pedal whilst going through the motions.

No?

None taken, music being a very subjective thing.

Anything from Todd or Utopia from Deface The Music onwards I wouldn't know, as I didn't care for any of it, except maybe some of Healer. As I don't recognize it, it must be a later work.

These clips from Daryl Hall's place (or is it Oates, always got those two mixed up) are generally pretty ok, rehashed versions of old songs not as good as the originals but diehard fans would like them. After hearing them I go back to the originals to remember whyw I like them.

Hall and Oates,

Wasn't that the problem.

No one knew or remembers the difference between them.
