Don't tend to like the Scots as they are dour stingy and miserable bastards. Probably linked to be being so far north they get no sunlight, and so f'ugly they get no sex.

This band was good though for a 'chart band'. In fact live they seriously rocked. Saw them live back in the 80s they rocked the house..

In a class of their own. Well, for some strange reason I always included Crack The Sky in that class. Not for everybody, but for one of my college tribes these were key bands.

My (fond) memory of them is at the time of your 1st link. Jim Kerr is animated, ruthlessly working the entire audience... (even if you're standing right at the back, they're playing for YOU). He barely stands still, and just reels the crowd in. He 'owns' the venue - they did that very well.

Sorry to say the later links don't do it for me. There's... just comparatively little or no passion, power or soaring voices coming through (how it feels to me). On one of the later links above, Kerr actually sounds rather drunk (or similar). Hmmm.

Greenslade - Melange, 1973

Prog Rock before the whole thing, er, tripped over it's bell-bottoms and went head-first down the toilet of it's own self-indulgence and making.*

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a lot of prog-rock including this track/album. However I recall the seemingly endless aons between 'The late-hippy era', (say ended 72/73) and arrival of punk in '76. 3 years of Abba is a lifetime for a young nipper who loves music lol.

Actually I'd never heard of Greenslade until I lived in Japan. I think the JPnese must have bought out the rights to them. Their albums are all with sleeve-notes in JPnese.

* I'm not sure if Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells was prog-rock (ok, no it wasn't) but maybe the final peak of self-indulgence. Producing an album where the artist spends 20 minutes (a whole album side).... doing dozens of interpretations of a single theme on different instruments, each of which he names out loud... 'Mandolin!', 'Glockenspiel!', ('Look at me, aren't I am genius!') ... a pretentious bubble ripe for the pricking.
