Blizzcon 2009 - Ozzy Osbourne Crazy Train
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt2bY67QomU

With lead done (live!) by 7 YO Japanese boy.

[Really freakin wild, hope the young lad learns to get over it. But heck he does an incredible job]

* Don't know whether to file this under 'soccer mums', 'charity', or 'throw your talent out there and see what happens ''''babe''''.

Ram Jam - Black Betty (1977)

I used to love this song back in the day. So imagine my huge amusement earlier today on seeing my polite young wife discovering it and posting it on Facebook  As I said to her, I don't need to open it, I could sing it right now off-pat.

Delish' Gibson on lead. The drummer, eh SMS did you use to borrow his 'hi-top cream-jeans'* off him ;)

* For the younger peeps here. Hi-top jeans had a high waistband, the total opposite of what is fashionable today. Also they would often not have a single main button as today, but maybe three or even five (with the zipper below). I.e. the waistband itself was often maybe 3-4" wide, with these buttons on it, and then the zipper below. 'Cream jeans' relates not to colour, but that they are so tight, the suggestion is that stuff might somehow happen physiologically just as a result of wearing them. Apologies to SMS, no offence at all, rather just some jolly reminiscences of days gone by. It was just the pic of you at that refugee camp in similar jeans brought it to mind.

p.s. Nightblooming. Your link above, can you say something about it, at the least the band and title. I expect I'm not alone in not opening 'bare links' from newbie posters, and it would be nice if we can enjoy your link and all share our thoughts. Thx!

And following on from the above I said to my wife... 'Oh aye, you'll be posting Radar Love by Golden Earring next hehehe'.

Similar era, similarly considered 'heavy rock' at the time, and also an iconic tune. Actually come to think of it, it is amazing that this song and group weren't better known generally, 50 years, 40 albums, 40 national (Dutch) top #10 singles... not very many bands could have ever achieved that tally.

Great one for K-boxing too, but you have to take great care with your breathing! So for any wannabe vocalists who don't do this anyway, try and follow his breathing pattern as he sings, and you'll see what I mean... :)

Golden Earring - Radar Love.
This is a live version and for me a live performance tells me a lot more about a song than studio. The studio version of this though, is supremely tight and well mixed...

Edit to add:

Golden Earring - Radar Love (TOTP 20-12-1973)

A very tight version from Top of the Pops. As hard as I try I can't tell if they're just miming over a recording, as was common nay expected back then. If that is a live version... it's a very very good 'un.

yeah those two always felt similar to each other, though GE was on the radio much more and I always preferred the other one, I think Ram Jam were a One Hit Wonder but not sure

I wouldn't call them heavy rock, more like pop rock or mainstream rock

Same here, I probably wouldn't look at links with no names or context

Speaking of One Hit Wonders, this got little airplay but should have had much more, back in the day when Phase Shifters were still cool (I think they always will be):
Crawler - Stone Cold Sober

I wonder if anyone ever heard it

re: Crawler... my mind went, Steely Dan > Carlos Santana on lead > [Ah, this bit reminds me of All along the watch-tower] > back to Santana... Thanks for posting that, I can’t say I’ve heard it before.

GE, yes I recall hearing that on the radio too. I suppose I consider them and Ram Jam ‘heavy rock’, as I wasn’t a teenager yet at that time, so they were heavy to me. I suppose Black Sabbath might be a better example of mid-70s ‘heavy rock’... maybe.

p.s.
I was looking for recordings/versions of Ram Jam songs and came upon this. Recorded in a Texas prison in 1933, ‘Black Betty’ as sung by a negro chain gang... a real wow moment for me! :)

That chain gang BB was pretty cool, as was the music video by Ram Jam, never saw that and it's been years since I heard it. Took me back....

Yes Black Sabbath is / was the heavy rock example, one group I can speak about with authority.

Cool 8-)

Ah ok. I suspect you might have a couple of years on me. It always surprises me how just a few years can completely alter someone's musical knowledge and perspective. So yes, Black Sabbath were just before my musical coming of age, which I suppose occurred c.1977, right when punk broke onto the scene.

I have one ancient recollection though. Me, my sister, and her best friend Pippa having a day out at the Queensway ice rink in London. Now Pippa was truly HOT :) This guy skated up to her and tried chatting her up...

Him: Alright darling!?
Her: [doe-eyed innocent look, that would melt unlit candles from 100 paces]
Him: Hey what music are you into, do you like Black Sabbath?
Her: I've not heard of them, but I like The Wombles*.
Him: [stunned look, realises the pitch has terminally failed and skates off]

hehehe....

I have huge respect for Ozzy though. Sure he sings flat as a pancake, but he worked hard and 'played a great hand' in life.

Rock Lobster • The B-52's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnU3WoQZHJE

No idea where the vid is from... but is genuinely crap and ancient... like you're watching something from the 30s.

BUT, the point is that this was their musical hey-day.... so of note to those who know them.

The B-52's - Give Me Back My Man (by Karmadoza)

Love the original... I mean you can't fake that passion.

Wonder how many other covers respect the original while - arguably - taking them forward. Some loverly gittar in this.... love it.

The Who - Pinball Wizard (From "Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival")

Which was right after Woodstock IIRC.

... I have friends who attended both... though as I get older i realise it is less an iconic thing, and simply more of an age thing.

:)

p.s. Yep I have friends who 'borrowed $20' to get to Woodstock, and ditto the Isle of Wight festival, at which Hendrix arguably finally permanently 'detached'...

Well that's one way to start the morning after hearing the horrible news overnight.

Another raw one which captures them in spirit, I remember dancing my ass off to this stuff when it came out, first stuff I ever danced to, that, and Joe Jackson and The Ramones:
Planet Claire / 52 Girls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRLLX48WwMQ

That same show in Atlanta:

In response to a couple of posts here:
Rock Lobster - Family Guy

Rock in Rio, janeiro de 1985
The whole show

Hehehe... great links Brah and thanks for that!

Did I say* I've only seen them live once, and the birds were SO completely spam-frittered [i.e. kippered] that they could barely even stand up. And you thought Fleetwood Mac were stoners (ah-ha, nods knowingly!)

* Apols, my memory is shot-to-**** right now.
