Johnny Cash - 'Hurt"
What a coincidence. I'm currently fiddling with my guitar for Johnny Cash's Drive On

Funny, I came to Johnny Cash via the Nine Inch Nails. Who wrote 'Hurt'. It was of course a er... terribly dark kind of anarcho-smackhead track. Hence all the more poignant being covered by an old established and establishment man.

Here is an earlier NIN version, '94. They were better, or even weirder and more intense perhaps in the 80's, but I don't think there any vids of them from back then...

Ah what a weird connection you made between Johnny Cash and NIN :o

Thanks. Up till today the only NIN song I know of is 'Closer'.

Ah, the song of a tortured soul. NIN's felt tragic but Cash's version gives it a different dimension. It must've been flattering for Reznor to have had Cash cover one of his songs.

Isn't it just. I'd love to know the story of how JC came to cover THAT track almost right at the end of his life.

Closer? Mmmm. Here is a version ... this is much more how I remember the band. Really sort of out there and unreachable. (as they later proved when they went into a sort of mass death-spiral)

Flattering? Last time I noticed, Reznor was probably beyond registering the hands at the end of his arms.

The song is a lament to being a heroine addict. Which of course they all were (or certainly Reznor was) and it blew the band, which had SO much promise*, to pieces in the following year or two (I've their first 3-4 albums, and it's not an easy journey by any means).

Another vid that reminds me of what they were like. I doubt the mud was choreographed, I expect they just saw it and rolled in it. They were weird like that. Destroying their instruments and throwing them into the audience at the end was par for the course too...

p.s. Totally agree JC added a whole new dimension to Hurt. He was never my kind of thing at all, so very strange for me to arrive at him via that song!

* I remember back in the 80's the serious music press hailing them as the new Who. Which as a serious Who fan was both exciting and something to behold.

There was an extract of this featured in the Olympic opening ceremony which spurred me to find the original. Here a live version from the Old Grey Whistle Test, 1979.

Here's a lovely piece of music done by Jan Akkerman, done in the style of early jazz-pioneer Django Reinhardt.

Something to tap your toes to :)

Always interesting to hear other's picks, so thanks!

#1 for me, too saccharine, too straight forward. I had to quit at about 1 minute. It was doing nothing for me at all. But hey each to their own.

#2 Yes I know this tune. Very beautiful. If I were classicly trained I'd be able to identify the chord structures being used that 'tug at the heart-strings' as they do in the piano intro.

- Was this not performed in a very paired back version by a band that were called Japan? ... Oh here we go David Sylvian of Japan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1YkHJJi-tc I seem to recall it being used as theme music to a movie back in the 80s...

Lemmy feat. Slash & Dave Grohl - Ace of Spades

Motorhead was my entry point into heavy metal (I was punk/new wave, but my roomie put this on all day (45 with the arm back) and I took to it after a few weeks of hours a day lol...

p.s. This is not as tight as the original, but probably a bit more accessible to watch for those who have yet to be converted ;)

p.s. Original and live version - no guests. Deffo the one to watch! :-D
