This one exchange spanning 2 or 3 generations set those "Good English" programs back a couple of decades.

These two could be poster girls for the next campaign.

He probably ran off with a girl from China, hence the racist outburst that the girl must be from China and the general bitchiness.

Who could blame him?

Indeed, indeed . . . a lovely creature she is.

One thing I noticed in Singapore and to a greater extent here, especially with the Chinese, is the inability for introspection and admit fault. It's just not done. A bare-faced lie is stoically defended . . . despite the opposite being obvious.

In this case the old hag backed herself into a corner and reacts the only way she knows: attack

Erm... I don't think the forum rules allow me to explain that acronym (in both orginial Hokkien or translated into English), not without sounding so uncouth myself. It is downright vulgar.

Aaah, that one. I never knew it as CC or CCC . . . more like kani nabu . . .

I first learned the wonders of Canto or Hokkien vulgarities at my school, Cranbrook, in Sydney. One of my friends was a Singaporean, Sydney Chew, and he enlightened me - good stuff.

Oh yes. Sydney Chew. He has a brother named Burwood (because they lived in Burwood when he was born before moving to Vaucluse). His sister's name was Tasmay (Yes, Tasmania) . . . and David. (???? No-one knows)

That would be KNNB. Over here, the locals are polite enough to censor themselves and use acronyms instead for vulgarities (yes, acronyms again).

Not surprised, too many Singaporeans and Malaysians have grown love for Westernised names without knowing how distasteful and tacky it would be on them.

Heard of Fish Leung?

And God forbid, Peon and Gizzard!

:D I've lived and worked in this region for close to 15 years now and have seen some thigh-slapping names . . . but also some very nice ones . . . and downright odd ones - mainly among HK Chinese.

My two favourites:

Serendipity Wong - Lovely first name. She had an MBA and constantly told me it was an acronym for Married But Available. Pretty, too.

Hermit Ong - Odd, very odd. Hermit? An IT engineer. Nice chap.

My wife, though she grew up in the West from the age of eight, never adopted a Christian name . . .

My favourite is still a guy from the HK office named Dragon Chow.

Might as well call him Shark Bait.

Just another day on the MRT.

Fitting that the kindness corps were out on the CBD this week. I was watching them run around with signs telling people to be nice shaking my head...somebody is seriously missing the point!
