Like with the schooling thing I mentioned in this or another thread, where everyone was up in arms about giving locals first crack at admissions, which is not totally hard to understand. But who looses?

From where I'm sitting I see heated responses without considering the ramifications. Win the battle, loose the war. And it's not even a battle or a war, things are not even necessarily opposing. But fight like it is and it becomes a war, and the victory Pyrrhic.

So ok, the foreign kids get the crumbs of choice for schools. Now those kids can only go to lesser schools, thanks the the ridonculous system here that rewards robotic rote learners. The vast majority of foreign parents of those kids, whose companies do not pay for schooling, can not afford International School, so they are left with what choice? The answer is - Hong Kong. Among other answers.

So who looses? Singapore as a country from less people wanting to come here, Singaporean school kids from a more international community and for some their only real-life chance to interact with it, and the companies who set up shop here who won't continue to be able to attract and / or retain foreign workers.

On the latter point, I know of some people for whom that became a deal breaker, and is why they're planning to leave.

The foreigners are forced into a battle they never wanted and the locals win them out of their schools, the foreigners don't really loose anything that they can't get back home, in Hong Kong, or elsewhere.

I guess the only thing the foreigners loose is the chance to have their kids go to school with Singaporeans, which, sorry to say, somehow is not really loosing anything?

Apologies for being pedantic, but you lose the war when you become loose with your English.

too right

Post by lasvegas » Tue, 08 May 2012 2:27 pm

There is resentment against foreigners without a doubt. I have been here 20 years, and now more than ever the newspapers are stoking the fire about foreigners. You only have to look at the daily paper (wont name it) to see all the chit. This seems to have escalated over the last couple of years. I hate it all and am done now. Before i get replies about the airport, i do know where it is. Sorry to be so negative, it is how i feel about this place. It seems that all of a sudden Singapore has casinos, new hotels bigger than before and all this crap has started against foreigners in the newspaper and on Singapore forums.
Sorry if i offend anyone but i feel Singapore is getting too big for its boots now. :?

I'm not quite sure how you see the connection between the hotels and casinos and the anti-foreigner sentiment. Can you explain please?

From the few local articles and forum posts I can force myself to read, a lot of locals associate both the casinos and foreigners with Gahmen attempts to get rich at their expense. So they're not directly related, but seen as two symptoms of the same problem.

I will refrain from sharing my analysis as it may be mis-construed :)

I think it might be a convenient tool for the gahmen, to divert public anger towards foreigners, and away from themselves...

Edit to add: Meanwhile I was reading somewhere that the gahmen have a population target of c6.5m. Quite how that reconciles I don't know.
