Post by Mi Amigo » Thu, 01 Mar 2012 5:14 pm

For goodness sake! How many times?

ADVICE is a NOUN

ADVISE is a VERB

Aaaggghhhhh!!!

Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. Feeling better now.

Was the title a mistake or were you just being ironic?

Just my attempt at irony. As an American gentleman once said when challenged about the practice of making up new words in that country, "Hey, any noun can be verbed, OK?"

its and it's - there's another one. But we're getting into Lynne Truss territory. Here's a book for pedants if ever there was (or were )

The apostrophe confuses a lot of people, myself included at times. My excuse is that I honestly do not not recall being taught grammar at all.

However, to not recognise the difference between Your and You're is another thing, it is not only the apostrophe, it is that they mean two totally different things!

'Your going to have a lovely time on holiday'

Yuk!

Your and You're is probably my biggest pet hate, I am constantly correcting people on Facebook and they seem totally unaware of how stupid they look to me!

There, They're and Their is another one, for sure!

The one that I always remember my Grandad being annoyed by was Different from and Different to, things are always different from not different to! I tend to notice that from time to time.

Friday, 5:47 pm:

"So, are you going back?"
"What? But we just got off work. Why would I go back?"
"Uh....where are you going?"
"Home."
"Ah, so you're going back."

Did you know that definitely and separate are two of the most incorrectly spelt words in the English dictionary?!
