Hi Pinky,
Please have a look at your air con unit, use a torchlight and open the flaps, where the cool air comes out. If it looks like the photo i had posted on the 5th May, then you most likely have a mold infection in your room / home.
Normal air con servicing, will not involve cleaning the black circular fan and the cooling fins, you will need to get it "chemically cleaned", where they bring down the cooling fins / circular fan and use chemical to clean it.
Post a photo of your air con unit - close up to the circular fan area.
Thank you and hope this help.

Hi Pinky,
where did you get the anti-dust mites pillow case and sheet from? I'm interested. You should invest in an air ionizer to help purify the air in your bedroom, or in any room which you spend most time in the house. It will be good to get rid of carpets and curtains too, as that helped me a great deal with my allergies, and of course, lots of vitamins and antioxidants to build up your immunity.

i saw a patient recently who told me about some sort of ultra violet cleaning machine she brought from her native country (korea). it apparently kills all sorts of bugs in your mattress/quilt/etc.

i would advise that, as air ionizers are not the same as air purifiers, they are not suitable for every home. HEPA filters-equipped machines and SHARP plasmacluster air cleaners, however... are something else altogether!

Which ENT are you seeing? I have very similar problem, except it got worse recently because I was spending alot of time in Jakarta. I had otitis and my nose is bleeding so often I thought I had cancer!

My doctor prescribed nasal hygiene and nasonex, which seems effective.

Here are a few tips for your problem as well:
• Have as little furniture as possible in which mites can live.
• Clean walls, woodwork and floors with wet cloths. The floor can be polished.
• Only use rugs that can be washed once a week.
• Use bedding that can be washed often, cotton sheets, washable bottom sheets and synthetic blankets or duvets. Don't use woollen blankets or quilts.
• Make sure your chairs are made of wood or plastic.
• If you can, use plastic curtains and dust them daily.
• Use wet cloths and a vacuum cleaner with a no bag vortex and allergen filter to clean the house thoroughly, preferably every day, but at least twice a week.
• Avoid dust traps like teddy bears, cushions, dried flowers, bric-a-brac and toys.
• Wash bedding etc at a temperature of at least 60°C to kill the house dust mites.
• Leave bedding, duvets, pillows and mattress hanging outside for an hour every day or as often as practical.
• Put duvets and pillows in plastic bags and put them in the freezer for 24 hours at least once a month.
• You may want to sleep on a cheap mattress that you can exchange for a new one at least every six months.
• Dust mites hate dry and cold air, so try to air the house every day and don't use an air humidifier, which will only make matters worse. If the lower edge of the window is moist when you wake up in the morning, there is too much humidity in the air.
• Do not spray the house, it may worsen your symptoms.
• Do not touch dusty objects like books and old clothes.
• When you are likely to be exposed to substances that give you a reaction, eg when you are house cleaning, you should wear a mask.
• Don't allow smoking in the house.

Some of them are not the most practical items but if you can implement the reasonable one, you can monitor your situation for improvement.

Hi,

Ive been having horrible wheezing and sneezing fits lately, especially when going to bed. The minute I lay down my nose stuffs up and I have one hell of a time trying to breathe

Went to an ENT and got a ton of meds and a shot and was informed tht i have an allergy to dust mites (yuck) which apparently thronged to Singapore in the last haze attack.

Now tht i have rambled and scared everyone out of their wits hee hee....any ideas on HOW I CAN GET RID OF THEM???!!!! Doc thinks they are in my mattress and rugs, and vacuming every second day apparently doesnt help!

Any advice would be great...i CANNOT get a shot every month and I have a 9 moth baby i am really concerned about.

Thanks loads
Hi,

I also used to have dustmites problem until I bought a UV Vacuum Cleaner from Atocare - Singapore.

It really made my allergies go away. It was supposingly the dust mites eggs and droppings that caused the problem.

Singapore humidity is the cause of these dust mites.

Hi,my son is seeing Dr Lynn Lim,ENT in NUH,she is a Dean too, very professional lady, who specialises in allergies. My younger boy did a test to reveal that he is allergic to mites too, so she advised us to remove all soft toys, remove the carpets, get my curtains vacuumed.

She recommended Allenguard mattress protectors, and covers, they were expensive but well endorsed by some American association.

I bought mattress protectors, got anti dustmite pillows, I vacuum my beds every 4 days with a new Bosch vacuum cleaner that I just bought $800. I was told my Dr Lynn and also every 6 months , I engage Hygieneprof to clean the mattresses, but both parties mentioned that we should not use steam on the mattress because it makes the mites breed more.

My bed covers are changed every 5 days and washed in hot water 90C. I do have carpets but I get them vacuum always. I dont use the aircon. Well,I try my best that the house is kept very clean. And no pets because Dr Lynn did mention that the animals' fur is not suitable.
