I don't use any changing table, I change diaper on the bed. Sometimes, between those changes, "a leak" happens.
I find waterproofing the whole mattress is a lot easier for me :wink:
Well I can say that my child has spilled an entire glass of water (probably about 0.5L) on the bed and it got soaked up by the quilted mattress protector, and didn't go through to the mattress. And it's much more comfortable, I would think, than a plastic sheet, PE or otherwise. In the case of urine, it would go in the wash along with the fitted sheet.
