Recommendations for a New Expat

Post by Nsr1002 » Sat, 29 Oct 2011 5:18 pm

Hey all

Just moved to Singapore from the US for a few year assignment. Any recommendations for a single guy to see/do? Never been to this part of the world. Looking to meet folks and see as much as I can.

Thanks!

Noah

So what you are saying is you are boring? You don't have any personal recommendations as you don't drink or party but save your money instead. :P

The guy is fresh off the boat. Suggest he goes and gets himself banged out a few times. You know it makes sense. Besides it ticks all the criteria on his wish-list.

8-) :P

Since we have a comprehensive guide on the forum, absent specifics about the OP's interests, I thought I might suggest it.:)

Let's be fair now- hard to give specific recos after being here a week or so. I drink and party plenty but don't want to be that odd guy in the corner drinking alone.

Be adventurous with your eating habits and take advantage of all this place has to offer. You can get southeast asian food anywhere else in the world like it is here (i lived in NYC for 6 years and it didn't compare for this cuisine).

-Chili Crab/Pepper Crab - grab some friends and go to Long Beach restaurant and share two big crabs - they are amazing

-Satay - the best I've had to far is at east coast food centre (NOT the seafood centre)

-Laksa - My favorite is actually Claypot Laksa which can be found at the Alexandria Industrial food centre or on Depot Road food centre. Many locals will recommend a place called 328 Katong Laksa which is great as well.

-Chicken Rice - it's nothing amazing or mind-blowing but it's a staple around here and it's actually one of my favorites...plus it's dirt cheap. People say Tian Tian has the best

-Sambal/BBQ Stingray - this is my personal favorite. the best i've had is at Old Airport road hawker centre

The Geylang area is also famous for good food. If you're adventurous try the Durian at Geylang. I surprised myself and I actually like it.

For fun - if you're into clubbing I'd suggest Home Club. The two most popular clubs I think are Butter Factory and Zouk. I've never been to Zouk but Butter Factory was terrible (though I am a bad person to ask because I don't really enjoy anything but trance in clubs and there's none of that here).

Also here's a little tip. If you want to go to the top of the Marina Bay Sands but don't want to pay the stupid tour fee, just tell them you're going up to the bar at KuDeTa - NOT to see the pool etc. They will let you up for free, then you can go up no problem. If you say you're going up "just to see" they will charge you.

Hi Noah;

Honestly avoid Orchard Towers like the plague it is a terrible place and those guys were just being mean. Hope you are ok and are settling in.Welcome to Singapore. You could try the American club or German or Swiss clubs for sports, you can be any nationality. A lot of people like to drink or socialise in that way lots of drinking buddies on these sites, I'm sure you've been introduced to Clarke Quay area. Explore Holland V, the area around Botanical Gardens and the East Coast. Take care and if you need a hand with anything or are at a loose end send me an email [email protected].
