Advice on districts/neighborhoods

I will be in Singapore for one year, attending the Goh Keng Swee military college.

I am married, but will be by myself.
I like the beach, the gym, walking and eating in local neighborhoods.
I like drinks after work, but not partying.
I will require public transportation for everything.
I would prefer to have a small, cheap apartment.

Any recommendations on neighborhoods or districts to check out/avoid?

Something near Boon Lay (EW27) MRT would be good as it's got a Mall next to it. I'm not sure of the facilities at (EW28) MRT station but it's even closer to the school. The EW line of the MRT will take you directly into the middle of the financial district or you could transfer at Outram Park MRT to the NW line at get off at Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station on Orchard Road if that's your beat.

Prices of housing there can be found very reasonable and if you are not opposed to renting a room, you can probably find a master bedroom (in suite bathroom) in an HDB for 6~800/mo or in a condo for 1000~1500/mo.

If you mean coming back from work and going out to a pub then this would be the most difficult part to combine with cheaper accommodation. If going directly from work, then no problem.
Just plan it from your commuting perspective and the rest will fit.
