London's King's Cross fire disaster started by a lit cigarette that got into the escalator. Probably different construction etc. but there are some strong rationales behind such prohibition.

Give it a rest will ya. When have you ever heard of SGns taking instantaneous group action in the public interest?

Are you aware of the whole brand new safety system implemented in Singapore in 2006?

Basically all (yes all) small or big enterprises (actually it goes even beyond that) have to assess the risk of all possible injury hazards related to their working environment and if an accident happen and it is not covered by the assessment or the staff in charge did not follow Standard Working Procedures (defined within the assessment) the penalties can be very severe (also financial - up to 5-6 digits IIRC). So it take one more aware manager and the staff may act very stringent. Nothing to do with any form of altruism

Oh ok. But that does not seem to explain the act of spontaneous intervention by the locals versus the dolly/dollies having a puff on the escalator.

Well, as long as he plays by the rules he's okay. Just wish he made sense.

You should read 'vvleaandrews' story on this topic...
http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/ftopic ... ight=theft
She is facing a life ban from Singapore for the theft of $50. She got some jail-time too.
She did not have legal representation.
